Questions about Colby regarding location, food, social life, entertainment, etc.?

My son attended admitted students days last week and left a deposit by the end of the trip. He had a very positive experience and kept commenting on how much Colby kids seemed to love their school. He enjoyed a class he sat in on and met a ton of nice kids. The school is beautiful and easy to get around. Let me know if you have specific questions or send a message if you want. Good luck to all as I know deciding is hard.

My DD loved it. She could not stop talking about how nice everyone was!!! She thought the campus was beautiful. She also felt like there was not a Colby “type” which she liked. She said everyone she met seemed to be unique and have a variety of interests.

I’m interested to know what the OP decided. My daughter loved the admitted students weekend, and is very excited about being a Colby student.

@lettuceK Hi! I decided to go with Colby. It was Colby or staying in-state (Berkeley or UCSD). It was definitely one of the most difficult decisions I’ve ever had to make, and I didn’t commit until like 11PM on May 1st. I was super sad about moving away at first, but I’ve been getting increasingly excited about Colby since I committed too :slight_smile: Congratulations to your daughter!

I think you all made the right decision! My son has loved his freshman year . . . so much that he has a research assistant job for the summer! I am sad that he will be away all summer, but so happy that Colby has offered him so many opportunities. Good luck to you all.

@Waldo755, I hope your son gets to enjoy Maine some of the time! It’s so wonderful in the summer. We drive through Waterville every time we go up to our cabin in the mountains. :slight_smile:

@MaineLonghorn We are sending him back with a car, so hopefully he will have time over the weekends to explore.

If he gets a chance to go to Acadia National park, it’s worth the trip!

I think every Mule parent should hope that their kid spends at least one summer on campus so that they have a reason to visit (and vacation in) Maine themselves.

@Waldo755 , your kid is creating an opportunity for you…

@MaineLonghorn , let’s hear your Acadia advice!

@Waldo755 Thank you, I hope so lol! I’m still hoping I can visit Boston every now and then

@rachelnguyn , now you will have homes on both coasts! Excited for you.

@gardenstategal can I pm you with some specific questions about Colby “social” life?

@gardenstategal Haha that’s true! Thanks :slight_smile:

@gardenstategal, it’s hard to know where to begin! We stay at a little place called the Seacroft Inn in Bar Harbor. It’s a simple little place, but its location can’t be beat - a block from the water and right in town, so you can shop without having to worry about parking. There’s a free bus (sponsored by LL Bean) that takes you wherever you want to go. I recommend it during the summer, because of the crowds.

John Rockefeller built a network of “carriage roads” more than 40 miles in length. They go all over the place, and you get good views of lakes, mountains, ocean, etc. He built a lot of gorgeous stone bridges that are worth seeing, too.

The view of Bar Harbor from the top of Cadillac Mountain can’t be beat, but I always tell people that if it’s a clear day when you arrive, go up right away! It can get socked in sometimes.

It’s fun to explore Mount Desert Island (note that it’s pronounced “dessert”!), too. The Thuya Gardens are beautiful, and so are the Asticou Azalea Gardens.

A couple of years ago, my son and I took an air glider tour over the island. So amazing!

@dreamcatcher3 , of course. Not sure if I will be helpful, but happy to try.

@MaineLonghorn , thank you thank you thank you!

Congratulations! And thanks for letting us know :slight_smile:

For those of you who have to fly to Colby, do most kids fly to Portland or Bangor? How do they get from the airport to Colby? Does the school help organize any transportation on busy days like the day before breaks?

I am sure there must be a bus to the Portland Airport. I know for sure you can take a bus from Colby to Logan Airport in Boston. There are special runs during holidays and vacations. My son has taken the bus to the train/bus station in Boston where we have picked him up (we live in CT). Check out Concord Bus lines.

Portland airport! There is bus service from school with pick up at the athletic center at breaks. Not sure where pickup is otherwise but it’s easy. (There is also an active ride board.) It also works in reverse for returns. We are lucKY - lots of flights and usually good fares.

There is also bus service to Logan and Boston South Station.

My sense is that this is made very easy.

Thx @Waldo755 @gardenstategal We are visiting Bowdoin this summer and I like how close it is to the Portland airport. We weren’t going to visit Colby just because I thought it would be too hard to get there and back during breaks. I changed our itinerary and now we will see both!
