Questions about college admissisons

Im a junior now. Considering applying to ucb, u mich, ut austin, unc chapel hill, wake forest…I was wondering a couple of things…

If i take the ACT, do i need to take sat subject tests? is it better or worse to take the ACT or the SAT subject tests?

If i do take the subject tests, do i need to have it like 1 science 1 math 1 history/english? can i just not take one related to science because im not as good as that as i am at math, history, and english?

If i do both, and i take the math 2, us history, world history, writing/lit, and ACT, does it look bad that i didnt take a science?

Thanks

In some cases, if you take the ACT you do not have to take SAT subject tests. However, you need to check with the colleges you intend to apply to for their specific requirements. Some colleges don't care which SAT2s you take. Unless you are applying to MIT, Caltech or are intending to major in science or engineering, it won't look bad to not have a science test.

For UCB, two SAT II subject tests (of your choice) must be submitted regardless of whether you submit the SAT or ACT; for Tex and UNC, SAT II's are not required regardless of whether you submit the SAT or ACT, but if submitted they may be considered. Mich does not require II's and ignores them even if submitted. Wake Forest is one of the few colleges that does not accept the ACT; you must submit SAT but SAT II's are not required although they will be considered if submitted.

For a fairly good list of colleges that require or recommend II's go here: http://www.compassprep.com/admissions_req_subjects.aspx
For those shown on the list that require II's but have an asterisk next to it, that means they take the ACT in lieu of both the SAT and SAT II's.

If you actually decide to apply to schools that require II's, then check to see their requirements. Taking Math 2 is very often a good choice since some colleges either require that one or highly recommend it, and thus taking it leaves all your application options open. Also, taking science is either required or recommended at a number of schools if you are applying to science or engineering. Otherwise, you can usually take what you want.

Wake Forest does not accept the ACT, and it doesn't require SAT II's.

thanks a lot
drsuba, if a college is not on that list, what does that mean?

It means generally that the college does not require SAT II's but you should check before you conclude anything. That is a good list of colleges requiring II's but there might be some more, and at any given time a college might change its rules. Note that the vast majority of colleges do not require SAT II's; for example, of public universities nationwide, the only ones I am aware of that require II's are the UC's. UVA is shown on that list as requiring II's but it has gone from requiring to "strongly recommending." In fact, most public universities won't even consider II's even if submitted.

SAT IIs are only used for placement purposes at UT-Austin.
