Questions about Computer Science Classes??

If I do attend UVa, outside of my major which will either be in economics or cognitive science, I want to learn computer programming and web design, I have tried teaching myself before but have failed, so if I am in the College of Arts and Science can I still take those types of classes, and are website creation/design classes available? Thanks for any help.

All CS courses count as in the college. So you can take programming classes if (1) they fit your schedule and (2) you are allowed to enroll – programming (1-2 semesters) is required by the engineering school so sometimes the class is restricted. The intro programming course is restricted in the spring, and the 2nd course is then restricted in the fall. So you will want to take that class (CS1110) either this fall or any upcoming fall. An alternative is CS150 (not sure of its 4 digit number) which is more about computer science theory and liberal arts with a bit of programming. One of those two classes is required for the cognitive science degree anyways.

There are no courses on web design. However, there are “short courses” offered through the library’s media lab which focus on web design. Sometimes short courses are more like once per week one hour lectures that you can get credit for, but I think the ones offered through the library are either 1 day couple hour or ~3 session courses (so not the entire semester and not for credit).

thanks for all the information. So I see that taking a programming class might be hard due to scheduling and the amount of people enrolling, i guess thats fine.

I don’t really mind not getting credit for the web design courses, that is just something I want to learn how to do.

The introductory CS class doesn’t get full in the fall – if you’re interested, I’d highly recommend it.

it’s on waitlist now though apparently… isn’t that weird?

CS1120 is the intro course that was 150. Here’s a link to course materials and such, if you want to see what it’s about.

[cs1120: Introduction to Computing](Redirecting...)

CS150 (1120?) is always on a waitlist. It is awful, there is just no faculty to teach it on a larger scale yet it is required (or 1110) by many CLAS majors, including the BA CS major.
