What's the difference in taking a coordinated dual degree (i.e. The Roy and Diana Vagelos Program in Life Sciences and Management), and independently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts w/ Sci major and Bachelor of Sci in Economics from Wharton? Is the latter not possible?

When you apply to Penn, you apply to a school only, or do you have the option of applying only to a coordinated dual-degree program such that if you do not get in that accelerated program, you will not attend Penn?

Thanks!

^ okay i know the answer to the latter. you are still considered for a single-degree. hmm. penn isn’t known for sciences only is it

Ok I’ll answer one…tho I would definately get a 2nd opinion about this stuff as I start attending Penn this upcoming school year. A dual degree program basically cuts the requirements for getting 2 degrees. Its actually a bit harder just getting two degrees independently between two schools like Wharton and the College. Additionally, with dual degrees, you get two very good internships guarenteed, special advising, and a GREAT network.

To elaborate a little bit more: Though it’s possible to get two independent degrees from each school, the coordinated dual-degree programs make the process easier because they allow you both to double-count certain courses and to reduce the requirements in certain sectors (at least they have in the past, I’m not sure if this second part is true of the current LSM program). Basically, say you take Econ10, one of your LSM requirements. You can also count that towards your Society sector requirement. This is true of some of your major and “approaches to learning” requirements as well. If you attempted to get the two degrees independently, you would basically have to fulfill all of the school-based and all of the major requirements for both degrees.

Additionally, like Rt said, in LSM you are guaranteed one science and one business-related internship, special advising, guest speakers, and a strong alumni network.
