Questions about deadlines and response times

Hello again.

My applications are submitted and I'm currently waiting for responses. However, I may run into some logistical problems.

My application to Saint Louis University should be the first one back, in about two weeks or so. I will most likely be admitted and I'm considering this a safety school. In the unlikely event I am not admitted I will apply to Illinois U-C, but I'd rather wait until I get the SLU decision so I don't have to waste $50. I have until August 1st to submit my deposit at SLU.

However, the three main schools I'm focused on have serious problems with admissions notifications and responses.

WashU's decisions are mailed on a 30 day rolling basis after the application is completed. Thanks to their wonderful application status checklist on their website, I know that my last application component should arrive sometime this week, putting my admission decision sometime around March 15th. Apparently responses are due two weeks from my acceptance, or two weeks from when I receive a financial aid notification. I've already submitted my financial aid information, so I assume this would be no later than mid April.

Vanderbilt's admissions decisions are mailed April 15th, and I believe I have until May 15th to respond.

Northwestern, on the other hand, is a problem. Their website says that admissions are mailed on a rolling basis after the deadline, which is May 1st. Assuming that takes about three weeks to get back to me, I would have a decision near the end of May.

The problem is, Northwestern is my first choice. WashU second, and Vandy third.

I get a decision from WashU before Vandy, so that's fine. But Northwestern's application isn't due until after the response dates for the other schools. If I really want to take a chance with Northwestern, do I have to possibly give up going to WashU or Vandy, or is there a way around it?

i have this same problem with emory's late deadline. i was told that you should try to contact the schools who have offered you acceptance and inform them of your situation; most of the time they will grant you an extension. if they are difficult about it, you should choose which school you want to go to IF you do not get into northwestern and accept their offer of admission. then, if you were to get into northwestern, you can accept admission there and notify wherever else you had decided before that that you are no longer planning to accept your admission.

you may have to submit a deposit at one of the schools in order to hold your place and you may or may not get this back.
