Questions About Deferral from UNC-CH

I got deferred with a 31 ACT 1420 SAT, I was rank 99 out of 679 in a competitive class, and my weighted GPA was a 4.79 out of 6.0 and my unweighted GPA was a 3.58. I’m sick to my stomach because I went through something second quarter and I brought my 3 As and 3 Bs in five AP classes first quarter down to 1 A, 4 Bs, and a C overall for first semester.

I was elected as an officer for Science National Honors Society and have begun volunteering more. Aside from that I had an internship, and a job, with other various clubs thrown in there.

I don’t know what to do, it doesn’t seem like I can do anything anymore based off of my senior year grades to improve my chances of admission. If people with experience can give me my chances of admission or any other information or a course of action or anything I would be grateful.

Thanks.

From what I’ve heard in another thread, apparently the acceptance rate for deferrals is 4%. I do not know where this person got that statistic or if it is accurate. If it is indeed true, it would be a longshot for anyone to get in after being deferred. Judging from your grades, I think it will be very difficult for you to rebound as well.
That being said, miracles do happen. I would begin crafting a letter of update in which you carefully describe what you went through and why it brought your grades down. Mention that you are fine now, and that it was a bump in the road that’s made you stronger or something like that. Use the officership for SNHS and your extra volunteering as proof of that.
I wish you the best luck.

This supports the 4%/10%

Realistically, you need to move forward with plans for attending another school.
