Hi, I just applied to DePaul as a transfer for the fall of 2012. It is one of 4 schools that I applied to as a transfer, so I am really considering it. I just had a few questions about the school,

Is there many scholarship or financial aid options through DePaul for transfer students? My family is sorta middle of the road in terms of financials, where we dont qualify for much federal aid, but cannot afford to pay full price at 35,000 +.

I know that going to DePaul isnt the typical college experience, in terms of tailgating, football, and huge grass quads and Im okay with that, because of what Chicago has to offer. But how involved do students get regardless?

I love being involved in clubs. Mainly sports and community service. What options do DePaul offer for those? Community service clubs? Club and intramural sports?

Where is the best place to live? I know that housing isnt guaranteed for non freshman students, but coming from out of state I really want to be on campus. I like the more traditional options that Lincoln Park offers, but is also very intrigued by housing at the loop and being downtown right in the middle of a thriving city. I am from a small town in Washington, so Im very drawn to the idea of living in a big city.

Im interested in double majoring in international studies along with either history, political science or business. Does anyone have experience with those departments?

Also can anyone just offer some pros and cons of going to DePaul? Things that they like or hate about it? Coming from far away is a big risk especially since I will already be a transfer student. I really dont want to transfer twice, and am just trying to find the perfect school for me!

Yes there are scholarships and financial aid options for transfer students.
Scholarships, you don’t really hear about them.
Financial Aid, yes, but this depends on your family income.
Here’s my story, my tuition was about $10,000 this quarter, i had about $5000 in financial aid and i had to come up with the rest myself. I went to the office and told them i cldnt afford it and i got a $1500 grant. But yes they do try to help.

They are a lot of clubs at DePaul to join.

Well downtown is super expensive and a studio will cost you no less than $1100.
I would say the North Side is pretty awesome - Lakeview, Wrigleyville, Lincoln Park. Studios - $600- $1200
Whatever you do, stay away from the South Side, its the ghetto.

Students do not get very involved, the Loop Campus (downtown) is mostly for business majors and that’s where the college of commerce is. People just come to school and pretty much go back home, that kinda stuff.

I have met awesome helpful people.
Pretty much rich white kids kinda school. Northface + Uggs seems to be the fashion.
Amazing Business program.

Pros:
In Chicago.
Big East basketball games
Any degree is better than no degree.

Cons:
Terrible administration- (go to Yelp.com and read the DePaul University reviews, I also had to fight for everything.)

They might not allow you to graduate- (They will make up an excuse to get you to take more classes so they can get more money).

The administration lies- They lied to me about everything from putting my major on my transcript to anything you could name. Plus, your diploma will not list your major (if you receive one).

Terrible academics- This school is slightly above GED and just under a really good Community College.

Too expenesive- Northern Illinois will save you atleast $14,000 a year.

Not worth it- Why pay Nortwestern prices for a low quality education. Please count the number people of Yelp.com that have mentioned this?

Test Optional- They will admit anyone who is willing to pay the high price.

I believe the pros outweigh the cons for DePaul. It’s a great school for business(top 50 business school, I believe it’s #40?, Big 4 firms recruit often), it’s in CHICAGO, and it’s known for its diversity. The fact that it’s in Chicago may intimidate you housing-wise since DePaul doesn’t guarantee housing and Chicago can get expensive (one con about DePaul), but fear not. There are plenty of areas around DePaul that can offer relatively decent prices for a studio or apartment. I’ve seen studios for as cheap as $500, with all utilities included (water, gas, etc). The northside is great, but NOT ALL OF THE SOUTHSIDE IS THE GHETTO as depauler stated. Trust me, I’ve lived in the southside my whole life and can differentiate the ghetto from low-medium income minority neighborhoods and such, which is what the southside chiefly consists of. Don’t get me wrong, the ghetto does exist in the southside, but don’t let it throw you off. You can live there and not be anywhere near the ghetto;Bronzeville, for example, is a really nice affluent-looking neighborhood and you can get to DePaul by train in, what, about 20 minutes? Another great thing about DePaul, they give students a U-Pass valid on all cta public transportation (buses, trains) which is pretty much a card that gives you unlimited rides. I don’t know the specifics, but it’s really convenient. One really bad thing I’ve heard about DePaul, though, is their administration, which apparently sucks. Don’t know the deets on that one. I’m planning to go to DePaul as a freshmen for the Fall of 2012, it’s all a matter if I can afford it or not. Good luck on your search!

I work in admission. For any of you who are admitted students for the fall, I would recommend connecting with other incoming freshman through the Class of 2016 page on FB.

Hi I’m thinking about strongly applying for depaul next fall. My grades are alright. My first year of college didn’t go so well. I had some personal problems to take care off so when the year ended my gpa was at a 1.2. But now I’ve changed my major and I’ve been working very hard. My intended major now is finance and I have a 3.0 gpa. What are my chances of getting intl depaul?

If I’m still waiting to hear back for freshmen fall 2012 should I be worried. Am I getting denied? and would I be able to tell on campus connect whether or not I am admitted. I applied Jan. 2nd?
