Hi I'm a student thinking about attending Duke, and just have several questions.

1) How safe/unsafe is Duke
2) How is Duke's physics
3) How is Duke's engineering

Thank you so much

Hi I'm a student thinking about attending Duke, and just have several questions.

I can only address the first question. Duke is VERY safe, in my opinion. The campus is pretty insulated from Durham (sad but true), and it's sort of a bubble. Police are constantly patrolling, and blue lights are everywhere. Things like the bus system, Safe Rides, and safewalks ensure that you're not out by yourself at night.

Central Campus isn't as safe, but most of the students that have been assaulted there weren't being smart (e.g. going outside to do laundry at 2 am or leaving their front door wide open).

when you say "insulated from Durham", do you mean that Durham is unsafe? just wondering, my family is thinking of moving close to there...Cary maybe?

Cary and Durham are quite different.

The median income for a household in Cary was $75,122, and the median income for a family was $88,074.

Cary has the most Ph.D.s per capita in the U.S. for towns larger than 75,000 people

Cary was listed by CNNMoney.com as one of the best places to live in the Eastern

In 2004 the town of Cary was declared the ninth safest of 354 large cities in the nation United States in 2003

So in other words, DukeAlum, Cary is a ghetto.

When you say students were assaulted, what are some examples?
Were there like severe assaults?

lol ya, and so is irvine (#7)

In the last three years, there has been an average of 5 rapes, 2 muggings, and 20 burglaries per year. Not bad, considering the size of Duke's property (9000 acres). For comparison, Dartmouth has an average of 8 rapes and 30 burglaries.

I have several friends who went to Duke.

1) Duke is safe.
2) Physics is a traditional academic field. At the undergraduate level, almost all top universities (Duke included), will have very solid departments in all traditional academic fields.
3) One of my friends who attended Duke majored in Electrical Engineering. When he graduated, he was admitted into Stanford's top ranked EE graduate program.

In short, Duke is awesome.

As far as Durham goes, it really depends on where you are at. Some parts of Durham are not safe at all, but in the area where I live, I would not feel weird walking around outside at two in the morning.

Everybody thanks so much for your helpful
comments! ^v^
