Questions about Emmanuel College (biology~) !

Hi everyone,

I am currently a junior in high school and I am considering applying to Emmanuel as somewhat of a safety (Tufts, for example, is my high match/reach). I would apply as a biology (pre-med?) major and possibly double major with psychology. So to make things simple, I will list some questions and concerns below.

1) As a student with higher stats than the typical EC applicant, will I feel challenged by the course load the bio department has to offer?

2) How is the biopsychology thread?

3) Does Merck provide research/internship opportunities for biology students or is it mostly geared towards pharmaceutical research? What other research/internship opportunities are there?

4) Are the professors actively interested and involved in the students?

5) Female to male ratio: I was told it was 50/50 on a tour but I've found this to be false? Also how diverse is the student body?

6) Does Admissions give healthy scholarships to high stat students? I do not qualify for need-based aid, so that's all I can hope for!

7) Is studying abroad common? And easily accessible?

8) Finally, how easy is it to get active in the city and experience a more diverse population?

Thank you for reading! I appreciate any feedback!

Oooh forgot one: How is the honors program?

I cannot answer all your questions but I’ll tell you what I can, I have a few friends that go there.

1) As a student with higher stats than the typical EC applicant, will I feel challenged by the course load the bio department has to offer?
I not sure what their bio departments difficulty it like but if you feel you want something different you’ll be able to take class at the other COF schools (colleges of the Fenway). These schools are all within walking distance of Emmanuel, and included, Wentworth Institute of Technology, MCPHS University, MassArt, Simmons College, Wheelock College.

2) How is the biopsychology thread?
I really not sure.

3) Does Merck provide research/internship opportunities for biology students or is it mostly geared towards pharmaceutical research? What other research/internship opportunities are there?
I don’t know what the exact sure what there internships are but I do know that they have an agreement with Emmanuel to take a minimum of two students from their campus. If your thinking pre-med, then your near lots of hospitals which will provide numerous opportunities for volunteering and internships.

4) Are the professors actively interested and involved in the students?
Again I not really sure. I’m guessing its like most college where you see a bit of both.

5) Female to male ratio: I was told it was 50/50 on a tour but I’ve found this to be false? Also how diverse is the student body?
I think it is close to 50/50 from what I’ve seen it maybe 60/40

6) Does Admissions give healthy scholarships to high stat students? I do not qualify for need-based aid, so that’s all I can hope for!
I know of people with merit aid I’m just not sure how much.

7) Is studying abroad common? And easily accessible?
I not sure what they have for study abroad, but I think they have programs in place.
8) Finally, how easy is it to get active in the city and experience a more diverse population?
There are numerous Bus stops and the Green line is less than a 10 min walk I think its around 5 min from campus

I have to disagree on the ease of getting volunteer positions at hospitals. While there are lots of hospitals there is also a ton of demand for those spots.

I don’t go to Emmanuel, but I go to Simmons and I can tell you that Emmanuel is DEFINITELY not 50/50. It’s more like 75/25 female/male - the COF as a whole skews heavily female with the exception of Wentworth.

They also have some very good study abroad options - I am planning on going abroad through one of Emmanuel’s programs, as anyone in the COF can register for them.
