Questions about entertainment/drinking budgets

This is really more for current NYU students and alumni, but anyone else feel free to chime in:

How much money do you usually spend at bars, restuarants and clubs per week? I’m thinking it should range from around $150-$200 per week, is this reasonable?

Also, what about tipping bartenders and waitresses? What type of tip is normally expected?

I only ask because last week I hung out with an NYU friend at the sports bar called Park Avenue Country Club, which is near the Union Square dorms, and the waitress got angry since she thought the tip was not enough. Are all the workers of New York bars like this with tipping, do they pretty much expect big tips regardless of the service quality?

What type of meal plan do most people purchase? I’m living in a traditional residence hall for freshmen year.

Thank you.

hey campus dirt said the average money spent for week all together was $107

Someone who complains that their tip isn't enough doesn't deserve a tip at all.

whoa! how can you spend over $100 dollars in a week? you're supposed to be at school to learn, and maybe have fun one or two nights on the weekend, but you definitely should not be spending that much on a weekly basis in addition to the tuition!

I absolutely agree with angelnikki

if you are on a 10 meal plan... then there will be meals out... alcohol costs money, and lots of it... and you will buy odds and ends all the time for dorm, or a pack of gum, blah blah... its not gonna be that hard to spend money in NY

Most freshmen are 18...which means technically you shouldn't be drinking at all. I don't think there's anything wrong with having fun once in awhile, but you don't have to be drunk to enjoy yourself in NYC. I would plan to spend less money of alcohol if you want to have a decent GPA...

i love you angelnikki1 :) are you in NYU? grin

I'm a work hard, play much harder type of guy, so believe me I'll have a good gpa. I'm going to NYU for a high quality education, and the New York City athmosphere (benefits of location) comes a distant second, I have no illusions about that.

My question was for the going out and partying only budget, not other things. As Ranisparkle noted, spending money in Manhattan is quite easy, an average night out in a bar can easily run $50-$100 ($7-10 drinks, entrance fees, tips, cabs to get there, post drinking food, etc.). I'm also estimating that I'll go out 2-3 nights a week, which isn't crazy, this is college after all. I know there are also NYU dorm parties, but in addition to those, I fully intend to be part of the NYU bar scene which is centered in places around campus.

You cannot possibly live in Manhattan for less than $100 a week. Even with a 10 a week plan, that still leaves a few times that you go out to eat since nobody only eats 10 times in 7 days. Thus, I think that spending $200 a week at bars is not odd at all unless you want to drink in your dorm room all the time.

angelnikki, are you sure nyu is for you? lol

I'm considering NYU but there's no way I have this kind of money and if I do end up going (after a fight with the FAO) I'll be on such a tight budget. However, I love NYC to death and plan to have fun. But could any students tell me about the middle ground? I'm 21, love bars where you can chill out with friends (I don't drink like a fish tho, lol), love shopping etc. But I also love staying in, watching movies, going to on-campus events. Is there a larger majority that does this or does the larger majority seriously spend over $100 a week. because I just can't afford that and I don't want to go to a school with a ton of lucky rich kids!

I agree
100$ a week is nothing if it is spend on food/random stuff.
But if it's only for getting drunk the bar, it might be excessive.

i'm going to nyu this fall, and TRUST ME, after how much tuition my family is paying for me to attend nyu in the first place i will most definitely not be eating out every night much less spending $100/week. So for those of you who don't plan on splurging in the big city, you aren't alone. (I mean i'll spend on occasion, but $100/week is stretching it)

Btw, ABirch III, do most people really use taxis to get around? I thought the subway was far more practical in the eyes of new york residents.

Subways are more practical and economical. However, some people do not like the minimal walking from subway stops to their destination, which is why some pay extra for a taxi. Of course, walking is the cheapest mode of transportation...Hehe.

$100 per week?!? i have a friends whose allowance is $200 per month at nyu and she is doing just fine.

I plan on dropping 200-250/week. I am taking out a lot of loans to attend nyu, but my purpose of going to school in the city is to truly experience college in nyc, not live on a tight budget. I go out in new york all the time and an average night is dropping around 80. ($4-8/drink, entrance fees, cab rides cause the subways suck real late at night). Granted in this 200-250/week i'm taking into account that i'm buying a monthly subway pass ($78 so about 20/week), not getting a meal plan so will be buying groceries, and i like to eat out.

$200 a week is decent if you want to go out like 2 or 3 times a week (this is probably what I spent on boozing while at NYU). This averages out to $67-100 per night--anybody whose familiar with how expensive Manhattan is, knows this is pretty reasonable. Don't forget, many at NYU have, umm, how should I say this, "herbal hobbies"...that will be an additonal cost for some of you.

As far as cabs are concerned, most nights you'll be going out in Greenwich Village so you won't need a cab (this is especially so in you early years at NYU). If you venture out to other areas in Manhattan at night, you will most likely take cabs, not subways. A cab ride split with a couple people is not expensive at all.

is this kind of money essential for an nyu student? or are there ways to have fun without $200 per week? i know that i will not have that kind of money at school because im already struggling with money just to pay to go to nyu.

so.. this is probably a dumb question, but are guys factoring only their drinks, or for ladies... pretty much im asking the sexist question, is it gonna cost a girl as much?

girls often get into bars and clubs without paying the cover charge if there is one. guys definitely buy girls drinks so yeah probably costs them less.

like you said sexist quesion, so heres the sexist part of my answer: girls will spend less cause they get drunk easier and the better looking they are the less they'll probably have to spend.
