Questions about EPGY courses...

I’m considering taking some computer science/physics courses through EPGY, that my school doesn’t offer, and I’m wondering if anyone can shed some light on the follow questions:

Is getting admitted difficult? (I’m simply talking about online classes, I’m an ok student: 2200+ SAT, math competitions, blah blah)

Is the quality worth the cost?

How difficult are the classes?

Does taking EPGY distance learning courses look good on a college app for good schools?

Any other recommendations for my time/money?

Thanks!

uhhh, what is EPGY ???

It's a program at Stanford that offers (from what I understand) very good distance learning courses as well as a summer program.

let me guess...you have to pay for it?

Yeah.. prices range around $500, which is actually good for university classes, but these are online. Plus, I mean they're "supposedly" very intense.

lol any more insight???

If you can pay the fee, you're in. The program they send you is fine but the voice is extremely annoying. The first 10 or so assignments are pretty easy but then it starts getting a bit confusing.

I was accepted to the summer program.

Does your school district/state have a virtual school for online course, such as the Florida Virtual School. There a student can take online AP CS, for one course example and it is free. Another option is Dual Enrollment courses through your local community college or online from a University. Ask your school district about its Dual Enrollment policy. This would also be free to you, except possibly for books. EPGY gets pretty expensive and you would need to check with your college as far as earning any college credit for the courses.

Can you get credit for it at your high school?

I can. I mainly want to take an EPGY course because I've they're intense and my school doesn't offer any computer science courses whatsoever. Since I intend to major in that, I thought I might as well have a class or two on my transcript. Is EPGY worth the cost?

I got accepted into EPGY's summer program, but I denied the offer.

Somehow I felt as if I might have made a terrible mistake. Does anyone know their acceptance rate, and if going there helps going to college (anywhere) at all?

What else are you doing for the summer?

I did CTY for a while and my computer programming class (Intro to C Programming) was through EPGY. Admission is not supposed to be difficult (at least CTY is based purely on SAT scores I think). I thought the programming class was definitely worth the cost since it was so cheap (and self-paced). It wasn't very difficult but if it's your first programming language it'll take some getting used to. And my tutor wasn't very helpful. I guess it looks good on college applications because you're able to demonstrate your interest in computer science and also begin learning how to program. If you think you want to do that, definitely do it.
