So I'm completely new to this process and I'm unsure of how to proceed.

My mom does not technically have to file taxes this year, but she will anyway because every little bit helps. I have most of the FAFSA filled out, but I can't put in certain numbers because my mom's tax information is in a different state and we cannot access it. I have indicated that she will file taxes, but my estimations may be quite off. Can I send the the FAFSA with generous estimations to my first ten colleges (I'm applying to eighteen, but I chose the ten having the closest due date) and then edit it easily? How long will it take for the schools to see the edits? My mom's last stable job from early 2012 won't be sending her W-2s until Jan. 31st and the earliest due dates are Feb. 1st through Feb. 15th for the FAFSA and CSS Profile.

Can I edit the CSS Profile in the same way? I was taken aback by the amount of money it takes to send the profile. O___o It's pretty ridiculous. xD

I’m still learning this stuff myself, but I’ll tell what I’ve discovered. You can’t edit the CSS online once you send it to a school. You can send written changes.

Have you asked your mom for help? Maybe she can access her pay stubs online? I know many employers do this now. You could look at her last pay check and use that info for taxes. I did this and the info for us was similar to the W-2.

Good luck to you. 18 schools! I admire your stamina!

FAFSA is easy to update, the CSS Profile not so easy. If estimates are all you have use those to make sure you make all your required dates, then update as soon as possible.

My mom is kinda…busy? I’m on my own for this entire process. I’m not even sure I can get in contact with my dad for his part. sigh T__T lol Thank you for the info! No pay stubs online, but I think her old job can fax stuff to us…
And thank you! I need lots of options!

Thank you! I’m glad updating for the CSS is even possible, lol.
