Questions About Financial Aid? (Your Refund, CARS Bill, Aug 15 Deadline) Click Here!

"If you are expecting a refund check or electronic deposit, the earliest that would occur would be the Thursday before the first week of classes."

"If my financial aid has not paid my Fall Registration fees by the August 15 deadline will I be dropped from my classes?
No, the Registrar does not drop you for non-payment of fees until later in the semester. However, you will not be officially registered until a minimum payment has been made."

UC Berkeley Financial Aid Office FAQ

Hopefully this will answer 95% of the financial aid questions.

highly doubt it will answer the questions - even though it does provide the answers - as we seem to have a glut of redundant questions being posted by people who don’t search or read the other threads before typing their post in a panic

True, but might as well give it a shot!

Even though there have already been five panicking threads since I posted this…

only thing worse is the blizzard of attempted “official 201x results thread” starts in the days and hours leading up to release of admission decision.

^ those are fun to look at :D

Maybe you can answer my question…

My CARS account has three things:

Minimum Amount Due Now:
Minimum Due + Full Reg Fee:
Account Balance:

They are all the same so I don’t know if that’s significant. Anyways, my question is: how do I check how much money is on my CARS account? Is that the account balance? My Dad thinks that the account balance refers to the amount I have to pay but I’m not so sure he’s correct… Any help is GREATLY appreciated. :)

Account Balance is not only the amount due now, but all the posted future charges.

Room and Board (housing) is due in ten equal monthly payments over an academic year. Your ebill will show the amounts but with the dates they become due:

For example, might be $1,350 Aug, $1,350 Sep, $1,350 Oct, $1,350 Nov, $1,350 Dec which are all included in the Account Balance but only the first was actually due to be paid in August.

The only fields that matter are Minimum Amount Due Now and Minimum Due + Full Reg Fee
which are the balance that you would need to pay this month.

The difference between the two is for selecting the deferred payment plan - used only to split up the registration (tuition) charges for the semester. If you want the registration fees split into five equal monthly charges, you would have paid the “Minimum Amount Due Now” amount, after which you would be on the payment plan. If you paid the “Minimum Due + Full Reg Fee” amount, you paid all of the registration in August.

NET - all you have to pay is the Minimum amount on the CARS Quick Statement. Except for the two months when a semester’s registration is first billed (August and January), the two Minimum amounts should be the same. When they are different, it is to let you decide whether you want to pay the registration in one lump sum or spread it over five months.

Finaid will pay enough for many students that they never have to decide about the deferred payment plan and they may have all five months of housing for the semester paid up front. In that case, the Minimum Amount Due Now field is mainly for incidental kinds of charges - things like the gym fee for a semester ($10).

If we are expecting a refund check, should the “Account Balance” on Quick Statement be $0.00 or a negative number? Because before my Fin Aid kicked in, my account balance was something like $3500. But I got a scholarship of $4650, and that was applied towards my bill, so I should get a refund of $1150 or something like that right? But right now, on Quick Statement, my Account Balance is $0.00 So is this amount correct or should I be worried? Because I remember hearing before that you only get a refund if your account balance is negative or something like that. Thanks!

MyFinAid is killing me. I look at my CARS quick statement everyday because it is sporatic. A week ago, my minimum amount due, minimum + full reg fee were 0 and account balance was 1265.76 due. 2 days ago, my minimum and minimum + full reg fee were 0 and account balance was 276.75 due. I checked 10 minutes ago and now my minimum and minimum + ful reg fee is 6000.00 due and account balance is 6276.75.

What the heck is going on? Its like Berkeley cant decide how much to charge me. I have been playing with the numbers from the finaid and stuff and nothing is making sense. someone explain this to me please ;)

I’ve been having the same problem! It’s starting to worry me a bit. I called the financial aid office and talked to the CARS department or whatever it was, they checked my account and said that my bill for august has been paid by the school, but I should contact the financial aid office to make sure everything is set with my financial aid because I am being charged in September as well…Not to mention that it is almost impossible to get in contact with the FA office! :/

Also my Cal Grants havent been disbursed yet. I’m so confused anyone have answers???

It is pretty annoying that they have so many worried students and haven’t even bothered updating the financial aid website for Fall 2010.

My rent payment this month depends on my financial aid, and I’d at least like to hear SOMETHING about when to expect it, since it seems like they’re having issues with the new system.

This happened to me with my summer financial aid as well. As students, we’re already stressed out about money enough, we don’t need stuff like this to add to it.
