Questions about Flying Home

I haven't flown on a plane in ages. Thus I've got a few questions. I ordered my ticket from Expedia. They send me an Itinerary. Is that my ticket? Another question I have is, can I bring a laptop on board the plane with me?

Thanks

what you have is an electronic ticket. When you go to the airport, just bring a copy of your itinerary with you. You probably won't even need it, all they need is an ID (drivers license) & they will look you up in the computer. (or you can do the 'self check in' with a credit card - doesn't charge you, it just checks your name).

You can definatly bring your laptop with you (disable wireless internet before you get on board), also have your laptop easy to remove because when you go through security you will have to remove it from the case. You might also want to look up other restrictions for carry-on baggage that have been put in place since 9/11, I'm not sure what the deal is with that "liquids ban" that was on the news awhile back.

You don't have to bring any paperwork to the airport, just bring your photo ID (and a credit card if you want) and arrive at least 1 hour before the flight. The airline agent will give you your boarding pass or you can get it from a self-serve machine like the previous person said.

You can only bring limited liquids through security (I think 3 oz) and it has to be sealed and checked separately - don't bother unless you really need something carried on. Otherwise you can now buy a drink after security and bring it on board.

Laptops can be used during some of the flight but not for takeoff/landing.

Some airlines (Continental, for example) offer online check-in up to 24 hours before the flight. I find this extremely useful. Look more closely at your itinerary. You may see a code which you can use for online check-in. Just go to the airline's website the night before your flight, enter the code, and print out your boarding pass. It saves additional time and reduces hassle at the airport.

I have class till 1:20. Then it'll take about 10minutes to get to the airport. Will arriving at 1:30 be good enough for a 2:20 flight?

little short... especially if its during thanksgiving break/winter break and everybody will in the airport...

But i would take your eticket anyways (i always did) and make sure you don't take any liquid whatsoever (if you are a girl, check your make up) they took like 10 bottles of manicure from me and a mascara. ***.

Yo...they recommend getting to the airport (at a minimum) 2 hrs before your flight. You don't know how long check-in lines, security lines, and even traffic en route to the airport looks like. Plus, boarding usually starts 40 min prior to departure time.

two hours is for international flights... Domestic is an hour

It depends on the airport. If it's at LAX, its said to be three hours early for international, two hours for domestic. If its the airport in Ithaca, arriving 30 minutes before is just fine.

^ haha i been to both and i heartly agree. Ithaca airport is pathetic.

^ if the OP is in nebraska, i don't think he has to arrive two hours in advance...lincoln? that sounds a little tight- always work in a nice time cushion just in case. but if it's not a busy airport, that should be fine.

heh...even with LAX and SFO, I usually just do an hour before for domestic flights. Haven't been screwed over yet..

It doesn't matter if you are in Nebraska. It never take '10 minutes' to get anywhere, especially the airport.

Ha, in the town I grew up in, it wouldn't even take you ten minutes to ride a bike from one side of the city limit to the other.

Anyway, you may be cutting it close, but I think you should be able to make it (U of Nebraska is in Lincoln, right?). Definitely check in the night before online if you can, though.

I would skip the class you have until 1:20. Flights start boarding 30min before they leave, so getting there 50 minutes early is starting to cut it close- especially if you're not familiar with the system. While waiting in the airport sucks, that's why you have your laptop, and it's a lot better than missing the flight.

Flying really isn't that hard, and although anyone can give you a million pieces of advice, your best advice really is to just relax, and learn your own way around it. If you try having people tell you what to do and what not to do, it'll sound complicated, and you'll probably end up worried about it. So just relax, it'll be fine.

Just to point somethign out. I flew last year, day before thanksgiving. I waited somewhere in the realm of 4-5 hours. If you're flying that day, get to the airport early!!!

I would skip the class. Normally, you could probably get away with 50 minutes except at a very, very busy airport. But if you haven't flown in a long time, give it some extra time.

I also agree with the assessment that you can't plan on only taking 10 minutes to get to the airport.

sometimes secruity can take longer, if it is not staffed enough, or if a lot of planes are taking of at the same time

take paperwork, because if there is a problem, it is much quicker if the desk can look up from your records

also, consider the weather of travel time and some airlines close down boarding 15-20 minutes before take off, so if you aren't there, they might give away your seat

Um, I've done it in 45 minutes, but I don't recommend it, because although I did make it in time (at Philly International too surprisingly!!!) I felt very rushed. Especially if you haven't flown in awhile, I'd say give it around an hour and a half. If you get there early you still have time to talk around before boarding.

Too late. You want to get to the airport at about 12:50 AT THE ABSOLUTE LATEST for a 2:20 flight. Not only because of security, but your bags might not be loaded on board if you get to the airport late, especially if the airport's a big one like JFK or ATL.
