In short:

Excellent med school placement record.

Excellent law school placement record. And wallstreet placement/internships.

and 4. Diverse. You will find kids from all backgrounds and all over the country. Mostly upper income upper middle class types. Partying is a bad idea. Underage drinking is illegal and enforced as such. Some people drink and party anyway and it has one of two ordinary results: they flunk out or get written up and punished. Fordham is a balanced school…between studies and relaxing. But be warned, its a tough academic school and if you don’t do your work, you will not survive long. There are a million things to do which dont involve drinking. Including club sports. Fordham is very middle of the road overall on politics and not particularly politically charged. You can find groups for your viewpoint if you want.

Fordham compares very favorably to other peer schools academically. No, its not BC or NYU but its also not far behind either. A growing reputation. SAT scores have risen dramatically. New programs and new professors and new facilities.

Good luck.

Just so you know, my S says that if you do want to drink, it isn’t a problem around Fordham-RH. There are bars around campus that students can get into.

i dont if i am misreading your post, but judging by what i have read outside of CC, and some of what happy1 said, students at fordham do party a decent amount, but not as much as a lot of state schools. One review i read said that students at schools like NYU and Columbia see fordham as a party school.

I don’t see Fordham as a party school. While some people drink (as they do at virtually every college) there is a significant group that does not. The workload at Fordham is reasonably high so for most people too much partying is not a great idea.

yeah, thats what it sounded like, that it isnt a party school, but compared to schools like NYU. basically the impressions i had gotten was that it wasnt a “party school”, but students did party when they didnt have work to do.

Partying is a relative term. Some party by just playing board games, cards, playing music, impromptu dances in the basement of Queens Court, watching movies and eating popcorn, going into the city. Drinking occurs. Some kids drink to excess. Welcome to college. But most don’t. People who think Fordham is a party school have no idea what they are talking about. You will find party people at NYU and Columbia. The key is to be responsible, for your own health and safety, to be measured in your activities and balanced in your outlook. There are no frats and no sororities at Fordham if that helps you.

But if you can be responsible, mature and considerate of others, then there will be plenty of opportunity to relax and wind down. Most Fordham classes are on Mon,Tues, Thurs, Fri. …leaving Wednesday as a nice midweek break to sleep in, catch up on homework or papers or to simply chill out.

I don’t really know what ghostbuster is talking about… (s)he’s been stuck in queen’s court for too long…

Yes, people drink and people party. Most people at Fordham drink, including a good many of the freshman in Queen’s Court, the freshman wellness dorm. Most students drink basically every weekend. A much smaller proportion of the student body drinks on Tuesday nights, because they don’t have class Wednesday. Usually students go out to the local bars, or to house parties in the apartments off campus. (On-campus parties are somewhat hard to pull off, but many students pre-game in their dorms.) But I wouldn’t say people go overboard all too often when they drink, or at least they either learn their lesson or flunk out freshman year.

To answer your other questions:

and 2. If you want to get into grad school, Fordham’s not a bad place to go. If you put work into it, you’ll do well. As for how strong polisci and econ are- I’m not sure. I know a lot of kids majoring in IPE (International Political Economy), so you might want to look into that if you’re looking at both political science and econ.

I would say that the student body at Fordham, while not incredibly diverse, has at least a good mix of students. I wouldn’t stereotype them into any one group, like you might in high school. In terms of the way people dress, it tends to be very casual. Jeans and a t-shirt/sweatshirt. But there are also a good number of students who dress up, and fit into the mold of a fashionable college student. There are alternative kids and nerds. There are a good deal of bros, who tend to be quite loud on the weekends. There are prepsters. Unless you come from another large city, brought up entirely around liberals and hippies, and/or you could make a quirky indie film on your life, you’ll be fine. (But, if that is what you fit into, you might want to consider applying to the Lincoln Center campus.)

Father McShane, the president, attests that Fordham is better than BC. A lot of students turned down NYU to go to the Rose Hill campus at Fordham. A lot of students on merit scholarships turned down top-25 schools to go to Fordham. It has less prestige than the schools you mentioned, but, in terms of how much you end up learning, I don’t think it’s really too much of a difference. Based on the schools you mentioned, I think Fordham is better because it’s smaller. You’ll take smaller classes, and the teacher will actually know your name.

Hope this is a more realistic picture of Fordham you…

ha yeah it is. i have read some stuff online that made fordham seem a lot different than what ghostbuster did, but thanks, that answered a lot the questions that i couldnt seem to find a complete answer to.
