I am 20 years old, and currently enrolled at a NJ community college. I dropped out of high school because at the time, i was too immature for school. I went on to get my GED, scoring a 3230 out of 4000, which i have heard they take into consideration. After leaving high school, i worked at a manufacturing plant-first as a laborer, than eventually as a quality control manager. After more than a year off from school, i began classes at community college. My first semester i had a 3.0 with 4 classes, my lowest grade being a C+ in physics. Since then i have a 4.0 with 12 classes, and a 3.75 cumulative GPA. I never took the SATs, and am planning on taking the GSAE. I have very few extracurriculars, although i have been wrestling since i was about 5 years old. My dad graduated from columbia GS in 1980. Since high school i have matured incredibly. I am highly motivated and will do whatever it takes to gain admission. I plan on majoring in Political Science, and going to law school immediately after i gradiate. If anybody, especially current GS students or alumni, have any advise on gaining admission it would be greatly appreciated.

PS...My grades in high school were terrible, not because im stupid, but because i never cared. Will that be detrimental to my application? I would think it wouldnt make much of a difference because of the improvement i have shown.

What makes you think you're academically qualified to handle the rigors of Columbia? That's what I'd ask myself if I were an adcom reading your application. Will your application prove that? What college classes have you taken that are rigorous? What legitimate standardized tests have you done well on? Etc.

I am confident that I am academically qualified for Columbia. I'm not claiming to be brilliant, but i do know that I will do whatever I have to in order to succeed. I know that I can handle anything that is put in front of me. I have consecutive semesters with a 4.0 GPA, and i believe that attests to my abilities to handle a heavy course load. When you say rigorous what kind of classes are you talking about? All of my classes are rigorous, I make it a point not to take any joke classes. I am yet to take any standardized tests. If i take the ACT and do bad, do i need to report it to columbia or can i leave it out and take the GSAE?

What kind of classes are we talking about? Is your community college known as being difficult? The point is that there are probably lots of people who are able to get A's at CCs.

Actually my community college prides itself on being one of the top 3 community schools in the country...i have taken classes such as Physics, Astronomy, Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, Economics, and Philosophy. I also have taken math classes every semester since i have been at college. I took both required writing classes as well as European Literature...I have also taken two American History classes...thanks for the help man

Actually i just figured on taking the GSAE. 1400 wont even get you past the remedial programs at community college now. You need at least a 1700 for that.
