Questions about GPA

So, looking at the stats (GPA in particular) of the people on CC who were accepted at Yale I noticed that almost all were 3.9 or 4.0 UW. I know that not all of the people who were accepted are on CC, but from the people who are it seems that there is a pattern.

Do all of the students that Yale accepts have such high GPA's? Also, can having good recs, essays, EC's make up for your GPA? And do the admission folks at Yale do anything with your GPA (like weight it or something like that) when you send in your app?

Thanks everyone

hey, most people who get accepted have over a 3.9 U.W, if the B’s are during your freshman year they hurt less, and sometimes they do not matter at all. Or if your grades took a plunge during one semester, and you have a good excuse that you address in your application, that can again help it out. But again a 3.8x g.p.a does not hurt that much if you are ranked 1 2 or 3.

Basically, context is important, but I, personally, have never seen anyone get into a Yale with a g.p.a below 3.9, unless they are like olympiad winners, intel finalists, RSI, or some other exceptional talent.

Feel free to apply with a 3.8x U.W g.p.a, but I would think twice if it is lower than that.

My UW GPA was prolly closer to 3.7, possibly even 3.6 depending on how all the +'s and -'s worked out, it’s doable. And no, no serious national awards or Olympic athlete status. Oh, and did I mention I’m East Asian? Not saying it’s a trend, but intelligence isn’t solely based off of GPA. As to what weighting the admissions office does, no one here can tell you that.

I think they are more interested in your rank and the quality of your courses, rather than the absolute gpa. I, obviously, do not know for sure, but I think that a 3.7UW, but in the top 10% is MUCH better than a 3.95UW, but only in the top 25%. And, similarly, if the 3.95UW comes from mainly regular, not honors or AP courses, and the 3.7UW was done in AP and honors courses, the 3.7UW probably wins out again (all things being equal).

^ read above. I forgot to include the nuances in my haste to insist there’s no cutoff.

It’s all about context, and it definitely isn’t all about grades.

thanks guys… I was just curious, because my overall GPA right now as a sophomore
(with my 1st semester grades) is like a 3.7, but I screwed up freshman year because I came from a crappy failing public middle school to a challenging competitive private high school, and that was a rough transition…and the faculty pretty much made me take all regular classes.

But thanks again

Context is indeed the most important factor. Rigor is essential.

so if I did not take any honors classes freshman year, because of the school that I came from, am I pretty much screwed?
