Questions about Groton

As someone who has nothing invested in Groton, I have to say that this does not strike me as stand-offish. It was simply a statement of fact. The takeaway to all applicants and their parents for all boarding schools should be: Schedule the interview early, because the slots fill up quickly.

@skieurope I misspoke, it wasn’t standoffish, I guess I just got spoiled with all of the amazing and such accommodating schools being so kind with the interviews that when a school was anything a bit less than super kind it struck me as that

^^ The same happens to other amazing and accommodating but highly competitive boarding schools as well. It has nothing to do with being kind or not.

They simply can’t give you a slot when they are already booked till the end, and would have had to say no to many other prospective applicants already.

Daughter was sick and I requested rescheduling a 5:30am Skype interview (8:30am EST) at another top school, ahead. They couldn’t find another slot for her so she ended up not getting an interview with the school. In hindsight, she could have taken the interview anyway and showed the determination.

@ivydreamer01 I’m confused about your timeline. You called in November and they said everything needed to be scheduled the previous January? What am I misinterpreting?

And as for your question, absolutely not. The faculty is friendly from admissions to the headmaster, and I think if you got bad vibes, the person on the other side of the phone was probably having a rough day.

That was exactly my question lol @stargirl3

@ivydreamer01 But the interviews conducted in January would be for students planning to enroll that September. So November would be the next application cycle. I’m still confused.

Hi, I was wondering what are your favorite and least favorite things about Groton? I’m looking into applying for the next school year and I’m just trying to get as much info as I can. Thanks so much!

@iakhtar We call ourselves a family, and lest you brush it off as cliche, hear this: A couple weeks ago, I sent out a group-student email because I lost my pencil case. I love my pencil case! It has my favorite pens in it, and when I couldn’t find it, I was super bummed. The next day, I was at the headmaster’s house for Parlor (the whole grade is invited for cookies and ping-pong and general relaxation), and the headmaster’s wife, an English teacher here, asked if I’d found my pencil case! The teachers really care – apparently that includes my missing pencil case! (I eventually found it at the bottom of my backpack. Go figure.)

My least favorite thing is probably waking up for 8:00 Saturday classes. But you get used to it.

Adding to the interview discussion above;
I contacted the admissions office and asked how to schedule a off-campus interview, the lady stated that they do not conduct interviews as part of a regular application process ( :-/ )… She said later on (after submission of application and while reviewing your application) they would give you a call if they wanted to interview you. Much different from other schools I am applying to…

The above comment seems really strange. I scheduled my son’s interview a few weeks ago and had to call today to re-schedule. There were no issues at all and nothing about waiting to look at his application. He has a sibling who attends, but I don’t think they even asked me that when I initially called to schedule.

Yeah, interviews are definitely part of the regular application process. Maybe she meant that off-campus interviews aren’t?

Bump for new admits, though you won’t find out for another 5 or so hours!

@stargirl3 !! You are famous on CC! Any insights you can share for today? Did you hear about applications this year? Is it a record number like Andover?

@Golfgr8 No idea about the number of applicants, though the office was certainly busy. I’m excited to see if any of the students I toured have been accepted!

Thanks for checking in on us @CC today!!

Bump! I’m a current senior happy to answer questions!

Senior? How does that happen? Time and flies, etc.
