Questions about health insurance?

While I was skimming through the health insurance manual I saw:

“The Student Health Insurance Program has three components:
• Mandatory Plan – The registration fee included on your tuition bill grants access
to services at the Student Health Center as well as limited health insurance
coverage for certain hospital emergency room services and mental health
outpatient visits. See page 11 for more information.
• Optional Plans – The Basic Plan and Comprehensive Plan are designed to
provide reasonably priced healthcare coverage.”

Since my insurance isn’t covered in NY I thought I would have to pay 2k a year for a plan (the basic plan). However the basic plan is listed as optional. Is the mandatory plan included in tuition costs? I thought it wasn’t but I can’t see anything about how much it costs… I’m going to contact the school and ask them but in the meantime does anyone here know anything about this? Thanks!

The mandatory plan is not health insurance. It is in addition to your health insurance and provides for access to the Student Health Center. All students are required to pay a fee towards this. If you don’t have NY State Health insurance, than you can purchase the optional Basic or Comprehensive health plans as your insurance. Or you can give NYU proof that you have insurance through another carrier.

@kellheesi Did NYU mail you the information brochure on health insurance? I paid my deposit two days ago but I have not received anything from the school yet :frowning:
