My daughter has applied to Hendrix and is excited about what she's heard about the school but I have a few questions.

When would be the best time to visit? I notice they offer Scholar Recognition Days, Hendrix After Dark, as well as, the Hendrix College Experience Days.. are there any advantages to going to one over another? Also, she would like to do an overnight while she is there.

She is also trying to get a feel for the dorms at Hendrix. She is a girl and would consider herself a good student (3.9 UW GPA, 32 ACT) but also likes to have fun (no problems with drinking but not the type to get falling-down-drunk either.) Most of her friends are guys and she's not really into all the girl drama so wishing Hendrix had more coed housing options.

Any insight would be great. :)

If she’s applied for the Hayes, you might want to wait until you’ve heard back from them before planning when to visit, as the second step of that process takes place on campus and thus requires a visit. If not, see if the Hayes application deadline hasn’t passed- I believe she qualifies based on her stats, though I must stress that the odds of winning are low. Still, I recommend applying and visiting then if possible, as the scholarship is worth it and you’ll meet other bright prospective students on campus during that weekend if you visit then.
As far as the dorm situation goes, it sounds like Couch is your best option. As you probably know, it’s the only co-ed dorm. As you may not know, it’s right next to the “party” dorm of Martin, and though Couch itself isn’t a “party” dorm, there’s always something going on in the lobby, be it people playing Pokemon or Apples to Apples or watching Back to the Future. Also, Couch is close to the SLTC, which is another good place to find friends and hang out. Plus, as far as hanging out with guys goes, Couch is right next to the male dorms, unlike the all-girls dorms which are in their own little section of campus.
As you can probably tell, I’m a Couchie, so I’m a bit biased.
I also attended only the Hayes visit before attending Hendrix and had my overnight then, so I can’t give firsthand experience on Hendrix After Dark or the like, sadly.

That was all very helpful information. Thank you.

I have not heard of the Hays Scholarship but I will look into it.

I would say that the best time to visit would depend. If your daughter wants to have an experience that reflects a normal college day I would just call the admissions office and set up a overnight visit/campus visit day. You would get a better feel for what the campus is normally like and your daughter would get a better idea of what a normal night at Hendrix is like. If you daughter is interested in staying overnight, I would make sure that they are having overnight visits if you decide to come to the Hayes weekend or a scholarship recognition day, I know the admissions office isn’t having overnight visits during certain weekends. I found that the scholarship recognition day and Hayes weekend didn’t reflect the true nature of the campus as much. You don’t eat it the cafeteria, you don’t getting to sit in on a class, and because there are so many people your tour maybe a little more crazy.

I was also a good high school student (3.8 GPA and 33 on ACT) and I found that Hendrix was the right fit for me. It is academically challenging but it also has a great social scene. Most student study really really hard during the week and then have a lot of fun during the weekend. I also thought I wouldn’t like an all girls dorm, but I have lived in one for two years and I love it. It gives you a place where you can feel comfortable. And I spend a lot of time hanging out with my guy friends in their dorms so you can always hang out with guys. And while Couch is co-ed there are different areas for girls and boys so it is not like you are living next to a guy.

i think she has chosen not to apply for the hays. she (& i) are very satisfied with the generous merit scholarships hendrix offered, and she felt that since there are so few hays recipients it might give others a better shot. not that she was a shoo-in or anything lol.

i think there is a good chance we will be visiting that weekend anyway, but will try to make sure she is able to experience as much of the campus as possible.
