Questions about housing

are freshies allowed to have singles?
is it chosen by lottery?
i’m hoping to get a single.

Freshman do not get singles at Brown, and there is no lottery for you guys. Housing is randomly assigned based loosely on a short survey to match roommates.

modestmelody's right. You can try to get a single as a sophomore if you have a good lottery number or if you enter a program house that has singles for sophomores.

any suggestions about what should be covered on the housing form other than the few questions that are asked?

I want Hope damnit!

I better slip the housing people a $50.

bobbobob -- here's how to get into Hope or Littlefield. Break a leg! Some kids were placed in my dorm (Littlefield) because of injuries. They had specifically requested a first-floor room in a central location, and this is what they got. Maybe walking around on crutches for a semester isn't all that hot... but... if you're willing to do what it takes... :)

(disclaimer: these guys were legitimately injured... I am in no way suggesting that anybody hurt themselves to get into a good dorm... blah blah blah legalistic nonsense)

dude...i could really pull that off. easy access to a doctor who happens to be a brown alum.

hell yea.

id love to live in littlefield.. my adoch/tww host lived there.. and i love it.. big rooms + right off the main green.. amazing! i wish we could choose..

If you want to live in Keeney, have asthma or some medical need and request to be near the health center in case of emergency. This is 100% guaranteed to get you in Keeney or Wayland.

Ooh, good call modestmelody. I hadn't thought of that.

if you ask to be put in keeney, you'll probably get it

What's the best freshman dorm in terms of social interaction?

It depends on what kind of social interaction you want. If you want to meet tons of different kinds of people and don't mind dealing with people drinking and partying loudly, Keeney's the best place. If you want to become really really tight with a group of people, Perkins is your best bet. If you want a small, tight-knit dorm but not isolated dorm, Littlefield, Hope, and Wayland are great.

I'll say the best freshman dorms are Emwool-Mochamp. Emery, Wolley, Morriss and Champlin. They have a semi-private store room, semi-private bathroom, reasonably-sized room and to top it all, we have laundry room and kitchen in every floor. Also, we are practically on top of the V-Dub and the Emery Gym. Beside, we get to laugh at our not-so-lucky neighbor in New Pembroke for being a victim of a failed architecture project.

If you've never lived in Keeney or another dorm centrally located, I agree that Pembroke dorms are really nice. However, since those of us who have lived in Keeney have gotten used to never having to walk more than 3 or 4 minutes to get anywhere, the thought of Pembroke is horrifying. But hey, if you live there right off the bat, you'll never have anything to compare it to!

Well... Pembroke is not as bad as it seemed.. it is self-sufficient.. And you can find Thayer Street with its many restaurants and CVS right outside your door. Also... We have SPIRITUS FERMENTi:P Take that, Keeney.Hahaha... Well... I guess there's always two side to everything. I'd say Pembroke ranked among the top. I mean everywhere outside of NP and Perkins should be decent.

PS: When I say Pembroke, I do not include New Pembroke in it.

whats wrong with new pembroke?... and perkins?

new pembroke is an architechtural disaster: hallways too narrow for 2 people, constant turns, staircase crossings that resemble an MC Escher sketch.

Perkins: so far away, i'm not sure it's technically part of Providence.

it makes me chuckle that the dorm is still called new pembroke-- it was called that 30 years ago!

hmm.. is anyone really unhappy with their building though? i know ppl have been saying that x is better than y etc.. but usually it is accompanied with something to the extent of "but the ppl who live there often love it." are the 'bad dorms' really bad? do you hear a lot of ppl saying stuff like "i wish i lived in ___!"?
