Questions about IU, Kelley in Particular

I was admitted direct admit to IU Kelley School of Business. I've seen a lot of things that I like about and some things not so great. There's a possibility that I could be offered a spot in the honors college as well. I'd like to hear some other people's takes on some of the things...

IU is a big public school, with a high acceptance rate. I want to go to a school where kids have drive, whether it be academically, politically, etc. From what I hear, most kids do not, and it's pretty much partying and education and learning come second. Is that true?

Being a big school, that also means big classes. I really prefer small, discussion based classes and one's where TA's are not the ones doing the teaching. I want individual attention from professors where they would actually know my name. What are the chances that I'll get that at IU? What is the teaching quality there?

I've had a very diverse group of friends in high school, all different races, cultures religions etc. With IU being such a big school, will I have any problems finding a diverse friend group?

Lastly, I really want to be able to major across schools. I like business, foreign language and music. How hard is it to do a double major across schools at IU? Some schools make it very easy and a lot of people do it, but what about at IU?

Thanks so much.

IU has a high acceptance rate and a high drop out rate (for a really good school). If you are bright and avoid the slackers freshman year, you will be fine.

From a cultural perspective, IU is large enough that you will be able to surround yourself with whatever type of people you want. That doesn’t mean it’s easy and going to happen the minute you step on campus, but if you put yourself out there enough, you will find your group.

Inside Kelley, there aren’t any TAs that teach courses. Some intro accounting classes have TAs handle the discussion sections, but they don’t teach the lectures. The classes in Kelley are much smaller than comparable business schools from friends that i’ve talked to. The professors of all my upper level classes have known my name. Granted I went through Kelley Honors, but I actually can’t think of any Kelley professor who didn’t know my name.

Outside of Kelley in Geneds, it just depends on what classes you take. I’ve taken mostly small (25-40) person classes that encouraged discussion, but it just depends which ones you take. Even courses like Calculus and Econ are much smaller at IU than other large state schools.

I’m not going to comment on double majoring outside of Kelley other than saying most of the people i’ve seen try, failed. A couple were very successful though.

I think you will find ambitious, driven students in Kelley. Freshman year you will have classes with kids not yet accepted into Kelly, they may or may not be ambitious… but sophomore year and junior year with I-core… you are going to have plenty of competition. Kelley is moving up in the Rankings( currently 8th) and attracting more and more competitive kids. Kelley is very well respected on campus as well. It’s also ranked #1 with Recruiters… because Kelley graduates are well- prepared for the working world.
