Questions about JHU

Yup. You’re saving a year’s tuition and living expenses ($60-$65k). Also if you plan on going to med school or grad school the year off can serve as a gap year where you can focus on applications or testing or whatever it is you need. The main advantage though is the money.

Guys, are the Pre-Orientation programs good? I’m thinking of participating in Outdoor Pursuits, in the Multi-element trip, so I want your opinions.

Also, does JHU allow torrenting?

And finally, if I will join the Pre-O, the only available arrivals at the airport at Baltimore are May 18th and May 19th at 10:30 PM, which is quite late, so I probably will need to stay at a nearby place till the morning to receive my room on the 19th, so, what places are there? Can they make an exception and give me the room on May 18th at night? (Pre-O participants receive their room keys between 9 AM and 3 PM on the 19th).

Thanks guys!

Would definitely recommend some pre-o programs. You’ll meet a bunch of people there. Doesn’t hurt to ask them if you can move in early. Otherwise, grab a hotel/airbnb close to the inner harbor and uber to JHU when ready.

Bit torrent was used underground when I was there. There was no university regulation.

  1. I didn't go to pre-O, but I've heard good things about the programs and would definitely recommend that you check them out if you find the activities interesting.
  2. Torrenting is not allowed on the campus WiFi. It's not difficult for the web admins to tell if you've been torrenting and they can lock you out of the WIFI network. I don't know anyone who this has happened to primarily because no one I know wants to risk it. Usually people go to the Starbucks on St. Paul - their WiFi is pretty fast and it's only a short walk from campus.
  3. Usually the housing office won't let you move in early - though you can and should call and ask - but airBnB and hotels are always an option. There is a Double Tree hotel on W University (right off campus) if you're willing to pay for the hotel.

What is considered fast WiFi in the US? Like, what’s the speed at Starbucks, and can I torrent there? What about JHU’s internet speed?

And are you a current JHU student??

  1. In the US close to 50% of internet users have a convection speed of 10mb/s or greater. Extrapolate from that what you will.
  2. I don't know the exact speeds of JHU WiFi or Starbucks.
  3. You can torrent on Starbucks WIFI
  4. JHU WIFI is notoriously buggy due to all the students connecting to it, but you can alleviate the problem by buying your own router.
  5. I am a current student.
