Questions about John Jay

I'm in the process of filling out my housing and dining form, and my first choice for housing is John Jay. Can anyone comment on the noise insulation in JJ? How soundproof are the walls? I'd really like to do most of my studying in my room and not in the library.

Also, I'm a stickler for hygiene, and I've heard some negative reviews of the bathrooms in John Jay... are they really that bad, and, if so, in what way? How often are the bathrooms cleaned? Thanks a lot for your help!

with your door closed, unless a group of people are standing directly infront of you door and talking you shouldnt hear very much. If you are facing the street though, the most noise you'll be getting will be from 114th street

i would hope so! The bathrooms rnt that bad...it depends on the people on your floor but it can get pretty gross sometimes, especially over the weekend if for instance someone thows up or one of the toilets gets clogged.

1) this should be in 2011 forum

2) i disagree COMPLETELY with shraf's assessment of the soundproofing.

with my door closed i can still hear people talking in normal voices 3 doors in either direction. with it open, i can hear things almost to the other end of the hall.

however, its important to note that it really doesnt matter. if people are right outside your door talking then its perfectly fine to ask them to move to the lounge or something, its not a big deal.

also important, the soundproofing in both furnold and carmen are about the same (dont be fooled by carmen's cinderblock walls, they really arent that good)

3) agree with shraf on bathrooms

I remember this girl who lived next to me in JJ and played loud music constantly. It would penetrate as many as four doors down across the hall...those walls are paper-like.

The bathrooms can get somewhat...third-world. Sometimes I think Engineers Without Borders should take a year off going to India and inspect the plumbing situation closer to home...

In all seriousness, they're cleaned every weekday, but like Shraf said, weekends can be messy.

Oh crap, this will be an issue. What do you do if you have "company"? Even if you try hard, there's still going to be some "sounds".

LOL...Maybe you should go to Butler? Hehehehe :D

Welcome to college. You'll hear it inevitably...in every direction...

Oh boy, this seriously sucks. Please tell me it's not like in HS when everyone knows the next day about it? Any way of avoiding this? Are there any secret spots?

yea basically everyone will know. especially the neighbor whose wall you have your bed against. no one will care tho. and besides, if you're trying to hide it then it says you're ashamed which means you shouldnt be doing it...

so either take the good with the bad or practice abstinence and take that whole other set of bads

it's not like in HS - because nobody cares. If you're getting laid, they're either pretty jealous or just respectful. if they live next door, they may b**ch to their friends but if you seem a little humble or apologetic about it (and at least put on some music to blend in a little) it won't be a big issue.

the walls aren't much different in carman. they're a little more solid but I still heard my (hot!) RA getting wrecked by her bf on a twice-weekly basis. could've appreciated a courtesy soundtrack there, for sure.

I'll keep the music thing in mind, that sounds like a pretty good idea.

Denzera, is that RA still there? And has she broken up with her bf, :D?

she was a junior when i was a freshman in carman. so, no.

on the columbia scale though, she was a definite 9. probably a 7 on the NYC scale.

sigh Pardon me, i'm going to go... take care of something.

Haha n1 Denzera! I didn't know the Columbia scale was that low though, which celebrity would be a 10 on the CU scale?

You don't happen to do interviews for your company, do you? Are most interviewers as laid-back as you?

Elaborate on the scale system! I'm sure it will provide infinite amusement.

Skraylor, I'm still laughing at your comment about "just because you want a hot girl doesn't mean a hot girl will want you". Boys have such a sense of entitlement to perfect-looking women even if they aren't so hot themselves. I hear groups of guys ragging on a girl's looks and evaluating them as if they were all Mr. Universes themselves. It's both funny and disgusting.

viva, you pretty much have to work up your confidence so you can project that image. arrogance may be unsexy, but it works better than the other extreme.

as for the scale system, the usual rule of thumb is that if beer goggles are +2, columbia goggles are +3. i leave the validation of this as an exercise to the reader.

That's very true, about that whole arrogance thing. Confidence is always good but arrogance really isn't terrible, in fact, it can be an interesting challenge to try to get someone like that to pine after you :P

I have to say that Stanford goggles probably have the highest at + 5 or so.

This is hilarious. "Goggles". Bahahhahah!

LOL... the goggle story is hilarious.

viva, don't pretend like girls don't judge boys all the time. Our girls talk about everyone, 24/7. At least guy's are man enough to say stuff openly, with girls it's mostly just backstabbing.
