I'm taking the March SAT, so I'm in hardcore study mode. Unfortunately, I've gone through the BB, and PR, last year when studying the first time. I got a 620 in math, so I've been keying in on that. Yesterday, I took 2 math practice section-first an official CB one, and I got raw score of 48, so around 700. Immediately after, I took a Kaplan math section and got a 43-a 650. Is Kaplan math harder/different than reguar SAT math? Which score should I be going by?

A couple of points:

(1) The raw score doesn’t really tell you much. On some tests (even by the CB) a raw score of 48 could be a 700, but it could also be higher or lower depending on the relative difficulty of the test. CB acknowledges that not every one of its tests is exactly the same difficulty, hence the need for scaled scores.

(2) So let’s just look at your scaled scores. It is actually REALLY normal for scores to vary within a small range. Here’s an example from one of my students. These are his math scores on all the Kaplan tests he took for me, in order: 680, 690, 780, 680, 770, 710, 780, 700.

(3) In fact, when you get your official SAT results, they will give you a range as well as a score. Here is the quote from a score report: "When you take a test more than once, your scores may very. This expected variation is considered your score range. The ranges vary in size; a math score of 670 has a range of 640-700.

My question is basically how does Kaplan math compare to CB? Are they generally harder or easier, and how is that score reflective of your score on the actual SAT?

If you can, only use scores from real SATs (BB #1-#3, official practice tests, etc.) to predict future SAT scores. Kaplan, PR, etc. are fine for practice; however, I would use any scores from these non-ETS tests with a lot of caution (on top of the usual testing score variation that Got2BeGreen mentions).

Kaplan the math question styles are not what the SAT tests and therefore are “harder”

Ok, that’s what I kind of figured…I do better on the real CB tests, but have kinda run out of them. I just tried a Princeton Review math section, and got missed 10 in all…and I think Princeton Review is supposed to be super accurate, so its prob just me and my bad math skills :/

Guys, another question. Now I’ve been doing the Kaplan practice tests, and have been getting only one or two wrong on the writing (grammar) sections. I’m freaking out, because now I don’t know if Kaplan is way easier for writing and I’m going to get so many more wrong on the real SAT. What do you think?

bump! 10char

I really think kaplans too easy.
My friend who is a college sophmore gave me her 12 practice test book. I looked inside and the only tests he took were math & the scores are all in the 700-750 range. Her mom just told my mom that she got a 1350 o.o so… Idk what happened there.
