Questions about KU...

Hey everyone, I'm a junior from South Dakota and am interested in KU. My sister plays for SDSU soccer and she had a game down at KU so i went with my dad and walked around the campus and loved it. I didn't take an guided tour so i didn't find out much about the university...i was wondering if they have a good political science and pre-law program?

and i was also wondering why i should choose KU over schools like University of Iowa and University of Minnesota? or another Big 12 school like University of Oklahoma?

Thanks for your help,

KU is a wonderful midwestern flagship. My S also had Mizzou, OU and Iowa (only one we didn’t visit) on his list and in the end chose KU, although he knows he could have been happy at any of them. He just really felt at home on the KU campus.

As you noted, the campus is gorgeous, and since (unlike the rest of KS) it is high on a hill, the views are stunning. School spirit abounds and everyday you will see tons of kids sporting KU apparel. There is pride in being a Jayhawk. The town of Lawrence has a great relationship with KU and Massachusetts St. has tons of restaurants, coffee shops. galleries and stores. There is a shuttle at the KC airport that stops in Lawrence, so travel for my OOS student has not been a problem. He has found the students, faculty and support staff very friendly and welcoming and has developed great relationships with a few profs. The sports scene is amazing and the 4 year fixed tuition rate is great for budgeting the cost of your education.

My soph S has enjoyed most of his classes. He has had a few large lecture intro classes (chem & mythology) but for the most part class sizes have been 15-25. He likes his advisor and feels he has been helpful. When S wanted to change his major he received the guidance he needed to make a good decision and was able to complete the process easily. I’m sorry I don’t know any specifics about the poli sci program.

My S has just loved KU. Good luck, you have some great schools on your list.

Did you guys like the OU campus when you visited?

We did like the OU campus, but KU is prettier with its hills and views. We had more of the small town feel from Lawrence, KS than Norman, OK, although we did like both. I don’t think you can go wrong with either school.

Is the OOS admit with a 2.5 pretty standard? We are waiting to hear from KU.

These admissions requirements are for automatic admission. [KU: Office of Admissions and Scholarships](http://www.admissions.ku.edu/requirements/freshmen.shtml)

If you meet the requirements, you’re in. As long as your S’s transcript meets the Kansas Regents curriculum standards, an OOS 2.5 should be good. My S first heard via email with a snail mail letter following a few days later. He was admitted within 48 hours of submitting his app based on SAT scores we had sent a few weeks prior. Good luck and let us know when he hears. I think you should have good news very soon.

my-3-sons, thanks for the words of encouragement! They received his test scores about a week ago, so hopefully it won’t be too long.
