Questions about learning communities

I'm wondering what are some of the privileges learning communities offer? Is it simply that there is the interest housing and we can choose which dorms we wanna live in? (Learning communites = interest housing?) Or is there anything else other than this? Do I just have to sign up for this? Or I'd need specific requirements? For example, I'm interested in "sustainable living learning communities" Below it says..
- Open to undergraduate SU students.
- Students register for EAR 111 Climate Change (3 credits). << Is this some kind of required electives before I could join this learning community?

Thanks ahead. :)

in general, there’s a course associated with the LC, but yes, it is interest housing. basically, you get additional “bonding time” in a class that’s supposed to be of mutual interest, based on the theme of the LC. there’s an LC or 2 that requires an essay to apply, but that doesn’t sound like one that does. You don’t get to choose your res hall no matter how you do housing–LCs aren’t fixed in specific buildings and rotate based on interest/availability, and freshmen never get to specify a building. if it’s something you’re interested in, though, go for it! a bunch of my friends did LCs and loved them–it’s one way to get a sense of community for freshman year.

mearas00 - from the housing brochures my D received the Living Learning Communities housing has been set for 2010-2011 school year so depending on your interest whichever one you choose you will know which hall you will staying in ahead of time. My D was interested in several LLC, and she was able to narrow her choices depending on which hall each was in. She visited the campus recently so she was familiar with all the halls, their amenities and the campus locations of each. Good luck to you!

Thanks for your answers! :)

I have one more question though.
If I have a specific roommate I want to room with, does she has to select the same learning community preferences as I do? Or it can be different?

Thanks again. :)

She has to select the same learning community. Everyone in a certain section of a floor will be in the same LC.
