Questions about life at Barnard

I really really love Barnard and I am sure that I can thrive there.

Since I’m an international applicant, I would like to know more about life at Barnard. Is NYC very expensive for someone who has a tight budget? Are there any affordable places to eat and shop near the campus? What about entertainment? Your experience?

Thanks!

Kind of depends on what you mean by “tight budget”. Barnard does not promise to meet financial need of international students – are your parents able to pay full cost?

@calmom I’m going to apply for financial aid. This is from Barnard website “A small number of need-based scholarships are available to international students each year. Selection for these scholarships is extremely competitive and, given that Barnard meets full demonstrated need for admitted students, the review of applications for admissions for International Students is need sensitive.”

Since there are no Barnard students from my country recently so I hope that’s going to help me.

There are a lot of free things to do in NYC. Food - not so much, but you do have a meal plan/food service and the Diana Center for food.

Since you need financial aid, I think you should first wait to see whether you are accepted. My daughter had no problem working for her spending money, but I am not sure what limitations international students might face with on campus jobs or work opportunities. I also don’t know whether the financial aid office will adjust the awards for international students to compensate for the restrictions on employment – so those are questions you could ask the financial aid office if you are accepted.

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it
