Questions about life at Furman

I’m attending Furman next year and have a few questions about what life is like there. So if you’re a current Furman student or alum I would really appreciate your comments on them! Feel free to add any other experiences/advice you have as well. Thanks!

  1. Is South Housing preferable to Lakeside? I've heard Lakeside is less fun. Also I put Geer/Manly as my second preference for housing but then I later heard that they mainly house sophomores. Do the few freshmen there wish they lived with other freshmen?
  2. Is there much of an LGBT community at Furman? I know it's a more conservative-leaning campus but is there a way to meet other gay/bi people? Are people generally accepting of LGBT people there?
  3. Should I join a sorority if I want much of a social life? I'm by no means your typical sorority girl but I'm open to the idea of joining one. Does a lot of the social scene on campus revolve around Greek life and will I feel out of place in a sorority if I'm not what you usually think of someone in a sorority being like?
  4. Do girls on campus wear t-shirts and jeans/shorts? I usually dress pretty casually but it seems most of the girls on campus dress nice/preppy on a daily basis. I generally don't care how other people dress but I just don't want to feel I'm the only one who doesn't dress nice every day.
  5. What kinds of things do people usually do on weekends? Is there much of a party scene? How often do people go into Greenville?
  6. Should I bring a car freshman year? My parents are allowing me to bring one if they're sure I'll actually use it. Do freshmen with cars on campus find they're actually worth it or do they just sit in the parking lot all year?

Thanks in advance!
