Questions About Life At U of Michigan

Hello! I have a few questions about this school and was wondering if anyone could help me!

1) What is the weather like during the year? (I hail from Los Angeles and I was wondering how different the weather is.)
2) For those who are majoring in theatre, acting, musical theatre, etc., what is the program's atmosphere like? This school has one of the best musical theatre and theatre programs so I know that it is probably competitive and rigorous, but are the students and faculty supportive of each other? Would you describe it as a family environment?
3) Also, what are all of the clubs and groups involving the arts (and a description)? (Sorry, I tried looking on the website and could only find some of the groups!)

I will probably have more questions later, but if you have an answer to any of these, I would be very appreciative! Thank you!!

Michigan winters are cold. Not as cold as Minnesota, Montana or North Dakota, but as cold as Illinois, Massachusetts, Upstate New York and Wisconsin. October, November, March and April are mildly cold, while December, January and February are just plain cold.

Never majored in the performing arts, but I know that the University’s Musical Theater program is supposed to be quite good.

There is a whole UM musical theater thread here on CC. Peruse the listing and post your questions there.

There are four seasons. Summer and spring are green. Autumn is wonderfully alive with color. Winter is a definite winter. Not LA by any stretch. Personally, I like the change, like having 4 seasons. Winter is cozy and the snow looks great on the old buildings. But it is too long. Note the the skies are grey in winter, not good for sufferers of SAD.

The arts community in Ann Arbor is fabulous. There are so many shows, so much to see, you’ll never get to it all. I live in NY and I say that. In general, Ann Arbor has a more friendly culture than many other places, especially NY. They say that even about the law school. Not to say there isn’t competition and cat fighting, but I would say in Ann Arbor it is generally less than other places of its prestige.

We do have four seasons in MI, but I feel like fall and spring are pretty quick–it always feels like a pretty breakneck change from summer to winter in particular. It’s never long between the last hot days of summer to the first days of October snow.

I think the reason why people generally say Michigan is TERRIBLE with weather is because we get out so early, by 5/1 usually and so we don’t really get fair amounts of good spring days. I realized this my first year as the weather was extremely nice the last couple days.

So the winter is dark, cold, and brutal when it is, but you get out early for that.
