Questions about life at UCSC? ASK HERE :)

I figured with everyone who got in recently, there would be a lot more questions about student life...

So I made this thread!

Ask away!

so i didn’t get in yet, should i be worried?

I have a 3.7 gpa, and I have all my courses done. I’m in-state, and applied for the physics major.

That’s pretty weird. What are your SAT scores? Did you have some ECs? UCSC accepts almost everyone, so you may want to call them up.

Are you sure you’ve sent in everything?? Check your to-do’s, sometimes people forget to submit some transcripts and that can definitely delay the process.

so which college are you at aleiram? pros cons?

is it easy to make trips to SF?

are the people nice there?

is everyone really as hippyish as everyone else describes it to be? ._. i mean… are there a lot of conservative kids there… or are they like looked down upon since i heard ucsc is a pretty liberal school?
sorry if my questions offend anyone!!! D’:

Sorta, but no one really goes to SF. You can catch the greyhound, which is pretty cheap.

People are very nice and courteous (especially to bus drivers). It is unlike anywhere else I have ever been.

It is pretty hippy/liberal. There are people coming from all backgrounds, but the liberal environment is pretty strong. My professor said, and I quote, “If you are religious or republican, transfer.” As you may know, the only thing SC gets media attention from is our infamous protests. Also, some of my friends who are religious definitely feel like they need to hide their belief in God and/or conservative beliefs, because 90% of the people around them think they are nutcases.

i think the “liberal hippie” scene is one of the coolest parts of santa cruz :]

I’m at Crown!
I love the architecture as well as its location on campus. Also, I don’t mind that it has a nerdy reputation. A con is probably …the RIDICULOUSLY nerdy people. haha.

But they’re nice! Just a bit awkward at first. I’m pretty good at initiating conversations though, so it’s not a big problem. It just gets a bit weird at times…
Putting that aside! … I would say that most everyone here is pretty normal. We all have our little quirks, but on the whole, we like to go out (yeah that’s right, crownies aren’t antisocial at all) and party a fair amount.

I love how close it is to upper campus and all the trails. It’s nice to stargaze when the weather’s warm!
Our dining hall’s hours have SUCKED this year, but colleges 9/10 and Cowell/Stevenson are really close, so it’s not a big deal.
There are a lot of activities and events organized by Crown College as well, so there’s always something to do.
I honestly love Crown College and UCSC in general.

sunny:

 1. Hm… I haven’t tried it to be honest! But I’ve had friends visit me from Emeryville and it takes them I believe… around 3 hours? taking public transportation. So… not TOO bad.
 2. YES. Of course you’re going to meet the occasional rude/grumpy person, but on the whole, I would say that people on this campus are really nice and if you ask them something they genuinely try and help you. Most people are very nice in general though!
 3. There definitely is a large “hippy” population here, but there are also conservative people who attend UCSC. We have hundreds of organizations on campus, so it’s not hard to find people you like and want to spend time with as long as you’re willing to put A LITTLE bit of effort into it!

i saw your other thread on spring spotlight could you explain what that is?

and crown eh? sounds pretty sweet!

Haha yeah, I love my college, but everyone will say their’s is the best, so don’t take my word for it, come and have a visit!

So that takes us to spring spotlight!
haha

It’s basically just a program for students who received an offer of admission for the fall and helps to inform them a bit about what to do to accept it as well as give them info on a lot of other really important stuff for incoming freshmen (requirements, how to make sure you don’t get your offer of admission rescinded, etc.)!
Also, you get a tour and we’re showing dorm rooms this year!

It’s pretty much so you can get a bit of an idea of what UCSC is all about!
https://admissions.sa.ucsc.edu/springspotlight/

thanks aleiram51 & calitrumpet (: !
i am probably going to go up there to visit ucsc during my spring break  ! (the fun of making college choices hehe  ) i also hope by that time, i have an idea of which college i would like to be in
does anyone know anything about colleges 9 & 10? i don’t hear much about them, other than that theyre the newest and i think, they’re available to the freshman? :open_mouth: and i heard that theyre the “asian” colleges or something… .__.

The stereotype is that they’re the Asian colleges, yeah.
They’re pretty much the same, except college nine is yellow. They’re the only colleges that were designed by the same architect.
College 9’s theme is International and global perspectives and College 10’s theme is Social justice and community.
College 9 also has the International Living Center, where students have the opportunity to live with other students from all over the world.

Oh, and ALL colleges are available to freshmen.

Remember: The colleges are not based on your major and are purely residential. Just because you’re a science major, doesn’t mean you have to go to Crown college and art majors aren’t only found in Porter.
Choose the college that you like based on your own reasons; whether you want newer facilities, location, even color. (my friend chose college 9 because yellow is her favorite color. haha)

@Cali Trumpet: I’m a transfer student, so no SAT scores. I have all my classes completed to come in as a junior. I know people who are getting in with a 3.0 or 3.1 as transfers. It’s a little discouraging…

Are there a lot of research opportunities for undergrads?

Yes!
UCSC is a great research university! We have 16,613 students and only 1,488 of those are graduate students. Because of this, many professors reach out to undergraduates to help with research instead. The opportunities are definitely out there, you just have to take advantage of them!
A colleague of mine got to travel to Mexico with another student and a professor to do research. All because the professor asked for Spanish speakers who were willing to help, only two students showed up, my friend being one of them. Even though he only took Spanish in high school and was not a native speaker, he was able to participate in this and get his work PUBLISHED, as an undergrad!
Also, undergrads helped map the human genome here! Imagine that! Crazy, isn’t it?? :D

All this looks great for grad school. It shows you have hands on experience!

how is the biology program there? what is the perspective of it for medical school???

I really don’t know much about it! Sorry.
This is their website though:
[Biological Sciences Undergraduate Program](http://biosci.ucsc.edu/)

I’m sorry I can’t help you more!

Thanks for the answer aleiram!
