Are the RAs okay with students smoking pot in their dorms? What are the consequences if caught?

Of course not. RAs are here to uphold university policy and help students.
Pot is illegal.
If caught, you will get written up.

^^just because there job description states they are suppose to “uphold the university policy” does not mean that they religiously follow it. I’m just bringing this up because there was a whole other thread about whether a lot of stoners go to santa cruz. I’m fine if my roommate chooses to do so, I just don’t want to get in trouble for his actions.

Ummmm most RAs will write you up, but if the RA is cool and you’re in their hall, then sometimes they’re more lenient about it. But I mean, unless you’re smoking everyday, all day, it’s very easy to never get written up for it. Put a towel in front of the door, blow a fan away from the door, blow smoke out the window. Maybe I shouldn’t be tell you all this…But anyway, yeah let your roommate know early on that you aren’t okay with them smoking in your room, or at least while you’re there because if you get caught, everyone in the room gets in trouble. Unless you hide in the wardrobe, which works sometimes.

Whats the ideal party at Santa Cruz like?

Whats the Marine Mammal Physio thing… aha. sorry IdK what its exactly called. How can I get into that! =]

Does applying under a impacted major affect your admission?

(I’m a junior in HS, and I have alot of questions. THANK YOU!!!)

@Magicmonkey511: of course it’s not “okay” to smoke in the dorms, but if you have a cool RA, you might get away with it. but usually not because it’s their job to enforce the rules. if your roommate smokes in the room and you’re not going to do it, I’d suggest you leave the room because if an RA/CSO comes to your room and decides to do write ups, everyone in that room will get written up, regardless of whether or not they were participating. you can try and hide under the bed or in the closets, but it’s risky. the excuse of “I wasn’t doing anything!” will not stop them from writing you up.

@jaaaymar: I think you meant to ask what a typical party is like (because an ideal party would be a huge rager, lots of alcohol, cool people, no cops). all the parties are off-campus (so you take the bus). pre-gaming is necessary. upperclassmen throw the parties, so as a freshman, you have to just act natural and pretend you know people there (it’s easier for me because I’m a girl, so no one says anything). parties are spread through word of mouth and usually get broken up by the cops. the fun part is seeing how long you can stay at a place before it gets broken up. you’ll be lucky if you can go to a party on a friday AND saturday night. if there is an open party, I guarantee everyone will be going there that night.

What’s the parking situation like at UCSC? My son is starting the Fall 2010 and he wants to bring his car. Does he need to find a parking garage and pay a monthly fee?

You can’t have a parking permit until your junior year. You can, however, park your car off campus.

Most students take the buses, really.

It is extremely inconvenient to have a car in SC, especially for a freshmen who must park it off-campus somewhere. A city bus stops about every 10-15 minutes at bus stops across campus. This is the means of travel for probably 80% of the students.

If you have a car and you’re a freshman, you can park it at the church right off campus, or in the less respected area near Pacific. Both options are pretty pricey though. Having a car is definitely a plus because you can make those trips to San Jose and SF. Parking enforcement on campus is a pain, but you can park your car on weekdays after 8:30pm until 7am, and 24 hours on weekends. You can get a parking permit if you’re junior standing (90+ units). I got a parking permit my second year because I came in with a bunch of AP credit and was considered Junior standing by then.

As for smoking weed and doing drugs in your dorms. If you’re lucky, you’ll have a more relaxed RA. If not, tough luck. It’s against university policy to smoke within 25 feet of any buildings. Also, it doesn’t matter if you have a club card, the university does not recognize it as it operates under federal law. Cso’s are on duty after 7 pm til 3 am, and RA’s are typically gone on weekends. Just be smart about your decisions. If you want to smoke… go outside. UCSC is located in a forest.

Are there no safe free/less pricey public places to park your car for off campus?

I was thinking of taking the car to Santa Cruz 'cause I didn’t want to take the Greyhound/make my poor parents drive me there, but if the much cheaper alternative is the Greyhound I won’t mind taking it. The to + return fare would total just over 30$ for me. Do you guys know approximately how much one week of off-campus parking would cost?

how big is the asian indian population in UCSC. I am an Indian and would like to know if there are any indians that I can hangout with or is there a indian club in UCSC. In most of the other UCs they have big asian/indian community. so just wondering…

Can anyone answer my earlier question about indian community in UCSC?

Are the girls here hot?

ah. i came up with more questions LOOL  im having a panic attack here though because i really cant decide between ucsc or ucr…

  1. which school is better…
  2. how close to the beach is ucsc?
  3. is ucr’s bio program better than ucsc’s and how about art?

^ oh wait scratch those questions D: except for the beach one! (i accidentally asked those in another thread sorry!! >__< )
but i still have a LOT of concerns…

  1. im sorry if this offends anyone (!!), but on college ******* and ***** (college review sites), i read that the guys there are usually ugly and dirty D: is it true??? idk if the reviewers were being either really mean about it or just painfully honest…
  2. yup yup the beach question!
  3. how is the dating scene there  ehehehe smiles
    thanks in advance! :D

@winniepooh- according to College Board, the population is 23% Asian/Pacific Islander population, which is the second largest. So I’d say yeah, it’s big. I’m not sure about the clubs.

@tonythetiger- as a girl, I’d say that the girls are a lot better looking than the guys are. but that’s just my opinion.

@sunnybaNANA- 1) you’re gonna get a mix of people when you come to college. perhaps for some the majority is not good looking, but to some they may be. different strokes for different folks. come see for yourself. 2) like, 15-20 minutes by bus. 3) like I said, different strokes for different folks. this is college, there’s bound to be a dating scene.

@sunny

UCSC vs UCR: Probably UCSC. Its beautiful + more well regarded

Beach: It is about a 10-15 minute bus ride, 15-20 minute bike ride.

I believe UCSC’s bio and art programs are better than UCR’s.

Guys dirty: These reviewers are probably referring to the hippie population (those who don’t take showers, don’t wear deodorant, and wear the same clothes every day). To be honest, there are not that many of these people at UCSC. Mostly, from the perspective of a dude, most of the male population consists of regular college students.

I am a recovering alcoholic, and have been sober for 9 months. Is UCSC not for me due to its reputation? Is it easy to have fun in sobriety while going to school there. Do you know about the alcoholics anonymous meetings out there?
I am really scared to leave where I first got sober, do you know which dorm college i would feel most comfortable at?
