Questions about Mt. Holyoke from a prospective student.

Hello! I’m a junior who can’t visit Mt. Holyoke before I apply, so I need to learn about it by any means possible. If anyone could answer these questions, I would be very grateful.

I heard Mt. Holyoke is intolerant against conservative people. Is there any truth in this? I consider myself a liberal, but I really can’t stand people who, for example, “attack” people who think abortion is wrong. Debate and standing up for your views is wonderful, not considering the other side while calling them closed-minded is hypocrisy.

I’ve heard very little about what happens to Mt. Holyoke grads. Can anyone elaborate? Grad school, internships, jobs, etc.? Thank you!

Test scores are optional, but if I don’t send them, will I REALLY get the same chance as someone who submits good SAT scores?

How long can I study abroad? Will Mt. Holyoke help me with things like plane fare and living expenses?

Does South Hadley have good, diverse restaurants, places to buy cheap quality clothes, nice parks, etc.?

The best thing about the dorms is _______. The worst is _________.

I love Mt. Holyoke because _, but hate .

The Five Colleges a) make it seem like I’m in a university where everyone loves each other or b) is just a place to take classes and a Mt. Holyoke student wouldn’t really befriend a UMass student.

Wireless internet? Best cell phone provider?

The best thing about a women’s college is _____________.

Thank you so much for any input!

Mt. Holyoke is somewhat intolerant to conservatives, not incredibly so, though. I am anti-abortion and nobody has a problem with it. You can find a group of people that you fit with and you won't feel targeted, ever.

A lot of people go to grad school, and Mt. Holyoke is a feeder for top grad schools (HYP). Some people take some time off before going to grad school or going out into the real world, but many are generally content with their post-UG experience.

Definitely, but if you have REALLY good SAT scores, you should probably send them in.

You can get funding to study abroad for up to two semesters (usually for 2 semesters). If you are on financial aid, Mt. Holyoke can help fund your study abroad experience, but the plane ticket might be something you have to pay yourself. Also, if you are going to go abroad, you need to give MHC a $750 study abroad deposit: keep this in mind. You can apply to scholarships for living expenses, not through MHC though. Sometimes the aid might cover for the expenses (go to somewhere cheap, AKA NOT EUROPE!).

South Hadley has Mt. Holyoke. It is not much of a town. You can take the bus into Northampton or Amherst. Northampton is good if you want to go shopping or eat; Amherst is good if you want to see a good movie or eat. Basically, you an eat anywhere. South Hadley has restaurants, too, but they are fairly expensive and not really accessible to college student pockets.

The best thing about the dorms is their proximity to one another. The worst is the amount of heat I get in my room.

I love Mt. Holyoke because of the closeness of student-professor relationships, but hate the cliques that seem to form.

NOPE: The Five Colleges a) make it seem like I'm in a university where everyone loves each other or b) is just a place to take classes and a Mt. Holyoke student wouldn't really befriend a UMass student.
Neither one is true. We definitely know kids at the other schools, but we wouldn't consider it one big university. I was actually thinking about this the other day. It's funny-- sometimes it DOES feel that way, but never too much.

Wireless internet? Best cell phone provider
Wireless internet is good. Recently, I've been getting better wireless on the Guest network than on the MHC network, but it definitely exists haha. The best cell phone provider is Cingular. Verizon does not work in the Blanchard Cafe. Sprint doesn't work on the edges of campus.

The? best thing about a women's college is the community.

I hope you come to Mt. Holyoke; you'll love it!

i want to add a questionto that list.

when does MHC issue acceptance/rejection letters

Sarah: they'd mail it on March 28~30(I'm not sure which day exactly), and you'll be able to check your decision online on April.1

oh, okay.
thanks =)

i wouldn't know much about those questions myself because i am only an applicant, but i can agree with one thing: there is basically no south hadley. when i visited last summer, i noticed that northampton and amherst were cute little areas, but south hadley seemed to consist of a street, with the main campus (very large and very very beautiful) on one side, and the admissions office and a tiny shopping center with one restaurant and maybe a jewelry store on the other.

"7. I love Mt. Holyoke because of the closeness of student-professor relationships, but hate the cliques that seem to form."

Tell me more about the cliques that seem to form. I thought that was usually left behind in high school. How has this affected you or your friends?

Because the community is so small, we are somewhat forced into cliques. Some cliques, of course, are bigger than others. People socialize with others who are similar to themselves. Sports team members will talk to other sports team members, for example. People in singing groups will hang out with other people in singing groups. The cliques sometimes form by major, too, but I feel like the cliques formed within a major are somewhat forced and do not directly correlate with the friendships that take place out of class.

I met several people when I did my "Experience MHC" visit and I still talk to them. Two of them are in my group of close friends now. Unfortunately, Experience MHC is changing this year and prospective students won't get the opportunity to network with other students like I did.

I cannot explain it any better, unfortunately. You should be getting your acceptance letter soon. In addition, you will get access to certain videos with members from the Mt. Holyoke community welcoming you to campus.

If you have any more questions, please let me know.

chihuahua, the videos welcoming students was only done for the class of 2011. You should be getting notified soon! I have wonderful, wonderful friends, and we are not very "cliquey".

Hi...I'm considering Mt. Holyoke for next year, but I wanted to know about the guys situations. I'm definitely not boy crazy or anything, but do MHC girls have friendships or relationships with boys? Has anyone found the situation too extreme?

I am an international.......I wonder whether there is isolation, according to the "cliques" kind of thing? Can internationals really find a friend apart from her nationals?

wow...i really love the questions that have been asked here...seem to echo my thoughts(god bless the internet!!:)

im an international from nairobi...and ive decided to cum to mhc...im not extremely popular..but i have a medium group of great friends...i wanted to know if there is any snubbery by the local students(no offence)...ive heard that mhc has a large international body of students and that somewhat comforts me as there will be many nervous people like me..but is there alot of racism? and also...can u accept the decision online or u need to courior them? also...do u apply for housing once u accept the decision or wat?
