Questions about National Merit Essay

I'm wondering if you have to write a really creative/spectacular essay for this, like you would for college, or if you just answer the prompt as clearly as possible. Like do you describe a particular experience or "passion" in depth, or is it just like, talk about different aspects of yourself for 500 words?

the essay prompt is: "In your own words, describe your personal characteristics, accomplishments, primary interests, plans, and goals. What sets you apart?"

Also, can colleges you apply to see your essay?

if 15,000 out of 16,000 become finalists i doubt the essay will affect you much.
