Hello,
I'm new to these boards, so sorry if these questions have already been answered (though after a search, it didn't appear that they were.) I am looking in to (and loving!) Northern Illinois University's BFA program, and I had a few questions.

Firstly, I was wondering what the applicant/acceptance ratio is. I have been unable to find the answer after searching the website. Also, do they favor instate students, being a state school? Do they require on campus auditions, and if so, which type of monologues do they require?

Also, who is the best person to contact for further questions about these things? Should I contact admissions directly, or a representative of the theatre department?

Sorry for my extreme ignorance -- I'm kind of on my own on this search, and I am from California, so I am slightly oblivious to the school's procedures.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Yay! A question about NIU! My daughter is a freshman in the BFA Acting program. We live in NE Florida and she went to a performing arts high school for musical theatre. She wanted to concentrate on acting in college and she wanted to go to a school with a real campus and campus life that’s close enough to a big city (Chicago). Although they do have auditions on campus, she auditioned at Unifieds in NY. She had visited the college late September last year and was actually accepted into the school in September. She auditioned in February but they didn’t notify her of the BFA acceptance until all the auditions were over- which I believe was late February. I just like that they waited to see everyone before extending offers. The campus and her dorm are gorgeous and the people there couldn’t be nicer. For her monologues, she had to do 2 contrasting contemporary pieces. She also had to sing a song with a CD track (she did Sara Bareilles’ Gravity). I know there is a sophomore girl from California. In her class, there are girls from Wisconsin and Ohio. PM me so I can help you get in contact with the best person and the one that we went through. When my daughter visited last September, she got to attend a class, meet other BFA students, and see a play. It became her number one choice from then on and she can’t wait to see snow for the first time in her life!. Oh- and I think there are about 20 kids in her BFA class.

I don’t know anything specifically about NIU, but I would contact BOTH admissions (and ask to speak to an Admissions Counselor) AND the department (and probably you want to talk to whoever is in charge of the program you are interested in, or else the second-in-charge (usually either the Department Chair or Assistant Chair)).

Each may have information that you need that the other one doesn’t have, colleges are like that–nobody knows how the whole thing works, but each person understands their own little piece.

KEVP

Thank you for your advice, KEVP. I didn’t think of that, so I will certainly keep that in mind going forward!
