I have a friend who will be a senior next year and is seriously considering applying ED to NU. He had some questions for me, and I wasn’t sure, so I wanted to come here for some more info. I have some pretty general questions, but I’d love some specifics so I could help my friend out.

How hard and manegable is the workload?

How is the student body? I’ve heard many things about them being over-preprofessional.

What is the social scene like? This is one of the biggest criticisms of NU from what I’ve heard.

How often do students go to Chicago?

Thanks ahead, I really appreciate any responses. I’ll add some more speciifc questions as they come to me.

The woarload is really managable.Of course, it always depends on the program you're in. Pre-med people work RIDICULOUSLY hard!! They have to take a sequence in Organic Chemistry, and these classes are risiculously hard. People used to take Orgo at Harvard during the summer, to escape the NU chem department, but now they don't even recognize the Harvard summer classes. Other than that, it's really managable. From time to time you will have to study harder, when midterms are up and papers are due, but most people manage to have a decent GPA and still go out/ have fun on weekends.

I've heard the exact same thing about the student body, and I find it to be true only partly. Sure, there are a lot of people that have their mind set on Med School, Law school etc. But there's a lot of people who are undeclared. I would think maybe about 40% during Freshman yr.

It's true when people say "the social scene is what you make of it". if you want to party, you can. There's always frat parties, or, if you don't like these, there's always off campus parties every weekend. NU has a pretty decent social life considering it's a really academic institution.

Most people don't go into Chicago more than once or twice a quarter. However, as with partying, if you want to, you can. After all, if you take the EL express, you're in Downtown (station Chicago) in 30 minutes.
