This may be a stupid question, but please indulge me: Are outside scholarships supposed to be split equally between the fall and spring semesters for the year that they're awarded? It seems that on ESTHER, they have all of my outside scholarships going toward Fall 2008 costs.

Also, are financial aid packages for subsequent years similar to those offered for the first year at Rice (assuming that a family's financial situation stays relatively the same)?

Thanks!

My personal experience with your first question - Freshman year, all of D's outside scholarships were applied to her first semester.

Our financial picture has changed each year, so aid has been extremely varied.

freespirit - this would be a good question to ask the financial aid department, especially if you would like them to apply the scholarships to both semesters. If I remember correctly, my kids' Byrd scholarships were/are split and half is applied to each semester., but the one-time only outside scholarships were credited to first semester of freshman year.

I emailed this very same question to Rice about 5 years ago, and they said, "yes". That has been our experience. Our financial aid packages stayed the same for DD each of the first three years (our EFC increased slightly due to slight increases in income.) The fourth year we had two at Rice, so our EFC was approx split in half for each kid. There were no unpleasant surprises.

Thanks maysixxmom and anxiousmom!
