Questions about Part I on extracurriculars

Regarding the extracurricular interests on Part 1 of the application:

Although I don't know how to fence, I have been interested in joining fencing as an intramural sport or club...however, I'm not sure if Columbia has fencing for non-varsity. Does anyone know if they do?

If they don't have one, then I think I shouldn't list it as one of my extracurricular interests that I intend to start in college since I wouldn't be able to participate in it at all. In that case, I think I would put swimming (done it for 3 years but not competitively), but the same question arises: Does Columbia have swimming in terms of non-varsity (intramural or club)?

Also, does Columbia have any club that teaches piano? I have been interested in learning how to play piano, but I can't afford the lessons...I'm hoping some club can provide free lessons =D

Um…I don’t think you have to be TOO decided on extracurricular interests on Part I…

To answer the questions, I have no clue about piano lessons and fencing, but with regards to the question about swimming, yes. Actually, you have to take I think two terms of phys ed at Columbia, and of course, you must know about the swimming test, in any event, and with these two terms you can choose from a wide variety of activities…self-paced running, weight training, and yes, swimming–all levels, beginning to advanced.

So in putting the extracurricular interests, I would say try to stick to activities you already pursue…that would exemplify a student who has been passionate about something, and will be, even at Columbia. I think the interest that you express is great; however, all college students dream of doing many things on campus! I think it just doesn’t pertain to the application, at the moment, I guess, is another way to word it!

Good luck with the rest of the application!

Oh I see. I looked around and I don’t think they have a fencing as a club or intramural (but they do have Brazilian Jui Jitsu, Kendo, Raquetball, and a bunch others). Although I’ve done swimming for a while, I don’t think I’m not that good at it. But either way, I would like to continue it, so I guess I’ll follow your advice and put down swimming. Thanks for the help.
