Hey I want to go into Public Relations for my career and I feel like I can be successful in it.

However, PR is in the communications department and everyone describes anything in communications as "easy". I know what some will say, "go into marketing then" but I'm not exactly math savvy and I feel like I'd be a better fit with PR.

I'm just worried since communications is portrayed as "easy" that I could be doomed for a job(s).

With PR, you don't need to major in PR to do it. Almost any major will get hired to do PR. Your main concern should be attending a school in or near a major city. Just look at the pr sections of craigslist and rarely will you ever see a PR degree is needed. If anything they want people with good writing skills, so major in something like English where you will be forced to write and get better. Also be realistic about PR, because it's not a high paying job straight out of college. You'll have to pay your dues, which is why you see so many unpaid internships available.

One of my best friends runs a large PR agency. She graduated with me from Penn in the late 70's and was making 6 figures within 2 years. She never hires PR majors, she hires all sorts of majors from the best possible colleges. PR can be very sophisticated and requires critical thinking and excellent writing skills. Develop those skills and you'll find jobs.

im just curious because i too want to do public relations as my future career. what are considered good schools for public relations or writing/ communications… i am at syracuse university right now but im trying to transfer because a. i applied to newhouse and am probably not getting in and b. surprisingly i am somewhat unhappy here.
is it bad that i want to transfer even if i get into newhouse and it is known for being a great communications school?
also i heard a lot about university of maryland’s communication school and especially about the public relations program. my aunts went there as pr majors and they both are successful firms doing what they love.
