Questions about Rice from an interested senior

Hi!

My top dream schools are Washington University and Rice University, but I am more interested in Rice. I have done some research on Rice, and so far, it seems like a good fit for me (although it's too early for me to say anything, since I'm just an upcoming high school senior). I have a few questions about Rice that I have been wondering about lately:

1) How is the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering program at Rice? I hear that the Bioengineering Program is very good, but I'm more interested in chemical engineering, so that's why I asked.

2) Does demonstrating interest in Rice have any impact on one's admission to Rice? I'm asking because Rice is one of my favorites, but I am not exactly a stellar student (mini profile: 3.75 unweighted GPA (9-11), 31 ACT, 760 Math IIC, 720 Spanish). I would like to request an interview, and attend a session by a Rice representative, but is there anything else that I can do to express my interest?

I am from California, so I guess my out-of-state residency doesn't help much. But I would still like to give it a shot, because I am really enchanted by Rice!

Thanks guys!

1.) Rice's ChemE program is superb as far as i know. I heard alot of students get recruited by top chemical companies and petroleum companies such as Exxon Mobile and Shell. ChemE has a solid reputation at Rice.
2.) As far as interest, when you write your essay make sure you outline and define the reasons of why "you want to go to Rice". Also take a visit/tour with a Rice rep. Get to know some students and definately have a interview if you get a chance.
Your stats look decent enough for Rice but if you dont do well on your Essay or you don't show interest it might set you back alot. I saw some people who had not so "prestigious" scores and still got in.

It seems like Rice heavily factors in interest. Just start filling out the supplement and you'll know what I mean...

And of out-of-state residency weighs in your favor. Rice is interested in increasing diversity (including geographic diversity).

Though I'm not sure how much it will help you to be from California ... If I remember correctly California is the number two most common state after Texas at Rice (or NY might be ahead of it, I think that they were pretty neck and neck).

If you're interested in Rice, go ahead and apply, do the best you can on your application and see how it goes.

Maoskillskid, I just looked at the supplement, and NOW I get what you mean.

Thanks, everyone! I will most definitely apply to Rice, and see what happens.
