I'm currently a sophomore transfer student here at Cornell and I'm thinking about rushing. I've visted a couple of houses and I jsut have a few questions.

1) Since I'm a sophomore transfer, if I get picked for a house, is it mandatory that I live in the actual frat house for one year that Im here. Or is it possible to be a member and not live in the house my entire time at Cornell.

2) How difficult is it to get picked for any house during bid time? Does mostly everyone who rushes get at least one bid?

3) I've checked out a bunch of frats on West Campus and I've came across some I liked. Can anyone tell me what these listed below are known for (like sterotypes).
DKE:
Lambda Chi:
Chi Phi:
Fiji:
Phi Sig (white house on corner?):
DU:

nothing should require you to live in a house -- don't deal in stereotypes; go through rush, find the guys you like and if they offer you a bid, take the one you want.

ahh dude, you have to know people to get into the more popular houses. its tough to get in if you know nobody, just go to a party at the houses and talk to brothers. if that is difficult then you probably dont belong.
dke - kinda dorky easy to get into
lambda chi - dorky
chi-phi - good house with a lot of athletes, fairly selective
fijii - kind of a tossup
phisig - kinda dorky , but netter than dke or lambda chi
DU - a good house with a good rep

none of these houses have reps for anything specific really

nyguypwn, i had a couple of questions about what you wrote:
1) what makes a frat "selective"- if you're just supposed to click and fit in with them naturally then what makes them selectice
2) what makes Chi-Phi kinda selective cuz I really liked them and was hoping to rush there. will NOT being an athlete hurt my chances?
3) What makes DKE easy to get in and what makes it dorky? thanks.

by selective i just mean a house that a lot of people would like to join. its no reflection on who they accept.
chi phi isnt super selective, but there are enough brothers and rushees that they arent hurting for members and thus can pick and choose
dke couldnt have parties last year so they have been struggling for members.
last year i knew kids who showed up to one event or wtv and were given bids, this is changing though because they can throw parties again and thus attract rushees

mostly look for a house where you get along with everyone
dont buy into hype because you may be left feeling like you didnt make the right decision

Two Questions:
1) Being that there are 12 sororities and like 40+ frats, how do the mixers work? Does every frat have a mixer with a sorority?

2) I haven't really gotten a chance to meet too many brothers at different frats. Is not knowing any brothers before RUSH a really bad thing, or is it okay to meet brothers during RUSH? Thanks.

I think DU is somewhat selective, but definitely not the most selective. I don't really know how selective fraternities can really be when there are 44 of them. I guess a guy would have a better idea. Why don't you go to parties and meet the brothers before rush? You'll know if you fit in there and they'll know who you are.
