Questions about SC answered by a former student

UGH!!! I can never get a 3 or higher on the stupid calc ap test unless everyone fails... Oh well, lets hope i will do well on the entrance exam.

Ok, one more question. My mom just told me a coworker's daughter graduated UC early just to get away from the people because of the: hippie, drug, partying, vibe, which I'm aware of and don't care, but one thing she said struck me: that one of the problems she had was that guys were disrespectful, opening her shower when they knew she was in there.

I am not cool with that.

So in your honest experience, have you or anyone you know had problems with disrespect like that?

Actually yes, I do know someone(a girl) who was walked in on in the shower at UCSC. I don't know how the guy could possibly have done it by mistake so I'm guessing it was a rude, perverted way to get a quick peek. On the bright side, it only happened once, but who knows if it were to happen again. She moved off-campus the following year to avoid such an extremity again, oh, and plus it was considerably cheaper vs. a dorm room.

Wow... um okay so now that people have brought that up... how can we ask for a single-sex bathroom?

On the tour, they said that if you request a same-sex bathroom, the university is obligated to provide the request.

single sex bathroom = single sex floor though.

Oh... dam i dont want a single sex floor.. for gods sake I go to an all girls school, 4 years of all girls was enough for me. Well, I guess I just have to be careful and just deal with sharing a bathroom with boys.

do most dorms just have curtains in the showers? I thought some had doors that lock...

Ok, here's the deal with bathrooms. If you're on a single sex hall you have a single sex bathroom by default. The rest varies by college (and no, I don't know about every college, sorry). At Porter all bathrooms are non gender specific unless you're on a single sex hall. At Oakes there are 2 bathrooms per hall and they vote at move in whether they're gender specific or not. I don't know the process at other colleges, but I assume it's similar.

Yes, it's weird at first. But everything at college is weird at first. Do you share facilities with a sibling of the opposite gender? same deal. Toilet stalls lock. Showers have curtains, with a little changing area. so it's:
<curtain> changing area <curtain> shower <wall></wall></curtain></curtain>

I lived on the women's hall my freshman year, so I didn't have any issues with being "walked in on" but it's theoretically possible. Hopefully your hallmates have enough respect for you and your personal space. And if not, that's one of the reasons we have RAs.

Ok - so awhile ago someone asked how hard it was to transfer out of Santa Cruz if you were not happy with it. I was always told that inter-campus transfers are impossible and no one has any luck with them. Needless to say, I worked hard here for two years, made sure to keep my GPA high, etc, and this is the result:

UCSB - Accepted
UCI - Accepted
UCSD - Accepted
UCLA - Accepted
USC - Accepted
Loyola Marymount - Accepted

So if you are not happy with SC and it was not your first choice as I'm sure it was not for some of you, there is hope.

Hey Katiee, what was your GPA at UCSC and what GE classes did you take? I want to transfer from UCSC to UCB and hopefully get into HAAS with some hard work...

english, 3.45 (it is so low because i got 2 Cs in one quarter due to a persona lissue...i wrote about it in my essays...but without that quarter i had a 3.86 cumulative.

i finished all of my GEs freshmen year, and did major prep classes for BME and english (i couldn't decide) but i am transfering to UCLA as an english major and i'll do a bio minor or something.

in my opinion, UCSC is an incredibly easy school to do well at (and i did not take easy classes...that and i always took extra units), so you picked the right place to go and transfer. keep up your grades and i'm sure you'll have a definite shot.

How is the food at ucsc? Do they serve the same stuff over and over again?

can freshman have cars on campus? (more importantly... is it necessary/more convenient to have a car?)

I don't think it is a good idea to bring a car there. the parking fee is gonna cost A LOT. plus, ucsc has a really good transportation system. they have a loop bus that goes around the campus every 10 mins or so, and another bus that takes you to downtown.
but if you insist, you can bring a bike. although it really depends where you live. i would rather walk than to push my bike up the hills. :/

I visited UCSC about 2 weeks ago. The hills aren't that bad. A bike would be very convenient IMHO, so long as you can control its speed downhill with reasonable accuracy.

Then again, I haven't ridden a bike in over 5 years, so I might have a problem there...

BTW, with regards to bringing a car, freshmen and sophmores aren't allowed to get a parking permit.

AFAIK, freshman may not have parking permits absent some sort of special need. My UCSC children have told me of freshmen who parked their cars off campus and brought them up on weekends, but it is possible that weekend parking permits are needed now.

The local public transportation system is excellent and it is unlikely you will need a car.

Hey KatieeJr, can you tell me more about that UC intercampus transfer program? How long did you take to do it? What was the application process like (more than/less than what was on the fall applications)? Did you have to decide a major at whichever school you decide to go to? How common is this? And any other answers to common questions or just your expereince of it. Thanks!

Katiee Jr...It is possible to transfer somewhere else after one semester? What's the least time you could do it in?

Also, I've heard from some people that it might be a little lonely up there, almost too lonely? How is it? Does it feel like there's a lot of students on campus? And is it pretty easy to go out and do stuff? Is it boring?

Southern Cali, I know I'm not a UCSC student but I can answer the general question of: "It is possible to transfer somewhere else after one semester? "

The UCs work on a quarter system. Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer.
So I think you mean tranfer after two quarters perhaps?
The answer is yes BUT most likely only to a CC, MAYBE if you make the deadline on time a state school, but from the difference of quarter/semester system, it might be hard to figure out the credits. Transferring to a different UC after one/two quarters is virtually impossible because: there is a admission's deadline which you have to meet and generally they want a student to have a the general ed. classes over. I've heard of people transfering after one year, but not just a quarter or two.
