I really want to know what life is like outside of the classroom- I’ve heard some pretty mixed info about it being cliquey, underclassmen finding it hard to party, really exclusive clubs, etc.
Can someone tell me about their/a typical Georgetown social experience? Is it work hard play hard? The ‘typical American college experience’? Or all work no play?
Current freshman. A lot of the clubs are very very difficult to get into (less than 10% acceptance rate for some) and the social scene mostly revolves around them. Greek life is chill and kind of fun but does not play a giant role. A little bit hard to find parties some weekends for freshman but usually you can find something. Clubs/bars are definitely a big thing especially on Thursday nights. The social scene is what you make of it. There is a work hard play hard vibe but not as strong as some state schools. But def not “all work no play.” Don’t come to Georgetown expecting the greatest and craziest parties.
What clubs are you referring to? When I mentioned something along those lines to my interviewer, she seemed to not think that there was much (if any) selectivity in clubs.
@luvquizbowl Corp, blue and grey, guasfcu, germs, gaap, etc. There are a lot of clubs that are not selective but I would say there are about 20 very selective clubs and then another 20 that are somewhat selective. Corp and Blue and Grey and GUASFCU all have less then 10 % acceptance rates. Many clubs are harder to get into then the university itself. Any current Georgetown student would not deny the presence of selective clubs. I know people that have applied to the same clubs 4+ times and never got in. The clubs situation is not really ideal but I love Georgetown and it means you just have to work harder to find your place.
@NickDS Could you explain what the clubs like “blue and grey” and “guasfcu” even do? I found similar responses about clubs being selective, so I asked my alumni interviewer and they told me they had never heard of such a thing! xD
Blue and grey are the tour guides. Guafscu is the credit union. They all have a really large social/party component. This article explains: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/sydney-jean-gottfried/is-sleep-when-youre-dead-_b_8917488.html
I’m a current sophomore. I liked Georgetown because I thought it was one of the few academically rigorous schools where a good social life was possible. The first few weeks, there are open rooftop parties anyone can go to. Then, once you join clubs, you’ll have things to do that way. Some clubs are DEFINITELY hard to get in to, but there are plenty that don’t reject people and are lots of fun. The Voice–the magazine–is no application and no club dues (plus it’s fantastic). There are lots of clubs like that, and besides those, there are consistently parties open to anyone–freshman often end up at AEPi or rugby parties. I haven’t ever heard someone here complain they don’t go out enough, but “club culture,” the environment of ambition to be a part of tons of things, can be kind of a bummer sometimes. Anyway, if you want a school with huge frat parties that look like Animal House, that’s not here–but any level of social life is able to be found here.
