Questions About Stern?

What's the Pre-Med track like at Stern? I know it's a very math/econ/finance-oriented school, but are there a good number of students who are studying at Stern with hopes of eventually going to med school?

Also, how competitive is the Business and Political Economy program in terms of admissions selectivity? I know it was a new program this year but how large is interest in the program as a whole?

there is no premed track specifically at stern, you just take the premed classes that all the CAS students take. i only know one person in stern who did it, and they never slept. a lot of stern classes are really time consuming, and nothing will overlap b/t stern and premed so you will have a lot of work to do.

Pre-med is CAS for any school. It doesn’t make sense for an undergraduate business school to offer medicine. Unless it was hospital management.

There is no official premed track at Stern but I went to Orientation last week and they did have a special adviser for Stern students who were on the pre-med track and one of the sophomores there was planning to go to med school.

The pre-Med track is the same across all American colleges, although Med School requirements vary slightly from school to school. It’s basically this:

1 year of Biology w/Lab
1 year of Chemistry w/Lab
1 year of Organic Chemistry w/Lab
1 year of Physics w/Lab
1 year of English/Writing (this varies)
1-2 semesters Calculus (varies)

MCATs, research, volunteering at clinic/hospital, other EC’s, etc. Talk to an advisor at the pre-health center, they will help you out.

Also - in most American colleges, Business is considered an easy major and Med schools take rigor of major into account. On the pre-med forum, it’s been stated several times that while they’re not just looking for science majors, they do want rigorous programs. Stern has a repution for being really difficult though, so I’m guessing Med schools would take that into account by comparing your GPA with your peers…so yeah don’t worry about it. Especially if you’re studying something like Finance as opposed to Business Administration.

I don’t know if Stern + PreMed is more difficult than Science + PreMed, but it will make you stand out more. At NYU, most of the preMeds are studying Bio, Chem, or Neuro, and to a lesser extent, Physics, so something like International Business or Finance will make you more unique in Med admissions. Good luck!

Why in the world would anyone in Stern do pre-med? It’s not a business major! Might as well switch to CAS…

^ The majority of American pre-meds don’t make it to Med school (Well at NYU they do) since acceptance rates are around 3%-5%, so every pre-med should have a backup plan. With a Business degree from Stern, there’s a lot he could do even if he’s rejected from Med school. Also, many preMeds don’t major in Science anymore, Liberal Arts, Humanities and even pre-professional subjects like Business are not uncommon for pre-meds.
