Hi. I will be attending Stony Brook next year and I have few questions.
- What is the best meal plan to have?
- Does Stony Brook really empty out on the weekend?
- What are the best quads?
- Is Roth a good quad?
-How is move-in day?
-How are the classes and class registration?
-How are the professors?
-How are the internships?
Thank you to those who answer my questions!

My D is going to SBU and we are wondering about some of those questions. I think only you can answer the meal plan question. Do you eat 3 meals a day? Some kids sleep in and miss breakfasts. I think many people leave on weekends, but guess what? That still leaves many on campus. It 's a seriously big school, find friends that don’t go home all the time. I hope you have a great freshman year, and hopefully someone will come on and answer your questions. I bet the students are hitting the books for the finals. They will be out soon! Good luck!!

My son will be attending come August so limited knowledge here. When reviewing the meal plans, it was noted that it is easier to increase the meal plan rather than decrease. You can only reduce the meal plan I believe during the first and last 3 weeks of class, but you can increase at any time. Also, any money/points not used before the end of the semester are lost! There is also a dining plan calculator to help you choose what plan might be best for you.

Ok. Thank you. If you don’t mind me asking: What are your kids majoring?

My D is majoring in Biology. How about you?

I’m majoring in health science.

You will find that your eating habits change in college. Back home I am used to 3 square meals a day but today, for example, I ate one around 2 and I had some small snacks throughout the day, it really depends on your needs but I would start on Bronze and then add money if you need it. Quads depend on preference of style, corridor vs. suite, but Roth and Tabler are the best suite style and Mendelsohn is the best corridor style. Move in day is stressful and long but exciting. Pack in an organized manner. Registration will occur during orientation and people will be there to guide you through it so it isn’t bad. The professors vary but they are generally good. No idea about internships but the Career Center is usually helpful in finding them.

I heard that Roth is good but from the pictures the rooms look small. Also how likely is it that I will get that as my first choice and the undergraduate college that is associated with it even though I just sent in my deposit last week?

Roth quad has suites and in general, suite bedrooms are smaller than corridor bedrooms.

What is the best meal plan to have?
It really depends on how much you eat as a person. For example, students who like to work out and have a high metabolism get a platinum plan which is the highest, but students with a slower metabolism get a smaller plan. You can also upgrade/downgrade as needed, so if you run out/have too much money left you can easily add more or get a refund.

Does Stony Brook really empty out on the weekend?
While some students go home on the weekends, we do have a lot of international, out of state, and upstate NY students that stay on the weekends.

What are the best quads?
Quads are a matter of personal opinion. Some people prefer some quads to others, it depends on your style preference (suite vs. corridor) and your undergraduate college preference (ex. liking art or leadership, etc.)
-How is move-in day?
Move in day is very busy but there is a Welcome Wagon program where current students help you to move into your dorm.
-How are the classes and class registration?
We offer a ton of classes, and you will be taking classes for your major as well as general education requirements. For class registration, it takes place in November and April, and if you need any help you can talk to advisers about your schedule. For registration for your first semester, you will register at orientation over the summer.
-How are the professors?
Most of the professors that I’ve had are very nice and understanding. We have a lot of distinguished faculty.
-How are the internships?
There are definitely a lot of awesome internship opportunities here. Check out the career center when you arrive on campus!
