I went to Target today to look for stuff for the room and I was wondering about a few things:

1) I bought a bed spread to fit the mattress but its 39 x 81 x 11
I think I heard the beds are 36 x 80 x 14 at Cornell, should i return mine or should i just buy it from the Cornell catalog?

2) What is the maximum size for mini refrigerators?
Is my 19 x 19 x 19 too small?

3) I found that a lot of the dorms I visited had minimal lighting, is it normal for students to get floor lamps or only desk lamps?

1) In my experience, it doesn't matter much. However, if you think you'd be bothered by the bedding not fitting exactly right, by all means get a longer set. I'd look for cheaper alternatives to the Cornell stuff, though -- search under "extra-long twin sheets."

2) The housing website says it's okay as long as it draws no more than "3 amps [300 watts] to start and 1.5 amps while running." There are definitely large-ish compact fridges that meet this requirement, but you have to take into account whether it'll actually fit in your room.

3) People do bring floor lamps. It really depends on where you're living -- I think the newer dorms are well-lit, and I've heard that Donlon has poor lighting, but other than that, I'm not sure. The standard desk lamp works fine...as long as you're sitting at your desk. :p

this summer there will be tons of ads featuring "outfit your dorm room" sets - last year Bed Bath & Beyond sold a great multi-piece set for a great price...you do want extra long but they don't have to cost alot.

BBB & Target also sold Octopus lamps...about 5 lights coming off one floor lamp pole...my d has had lots of compliments on her room as it is well lit. 4 years earlier my s got a floor lamp for his Donlon room which also was a huge improvement. so do look for a floor lamp.

Housing includes desk lamp...do not get a desk lamp.

your room will come with standard issue window coverings...we "made" curtains out of two $10 pashminas (scarves) let me know if you want the details....

Turtle - sorry - jsut realized you are a guy - skip the curtains...the reason I went overboard on my d's room is son won't let me do anything!!! just get sheets and a comforter!! and a floor lamp - but not cute!!!

Yes...make sure your sheets are twin extra long. However, lots of folks (myself included) knew we'd only be on campus for a year or 2 and since comforters can get pricey we purchased Twin XL sheets and Full comforters and bought new sheets when we moved. The larger comforter also helped hide any "under the bed messes" :-) You don't have to do this at all....just thought I'd throw it out there.

Cool, thanks everyone, Im just getting freaked out about this now because Im gonna have to purchase everything before the prefresh summer prog starts

Add extension cords and surge protector for your computer. Girls may want to get clothes rack to hang their delicates after wash. Refrige is handy because you could have cereal and milk in your room without running out for breakfast, especially when it's cold. Curtains are not bad in the room, but they don't match your bedspread(!) I told my daughter no on that one. If you are used to nice mattress at home, I would get a feather bed topper because mattress in the dorm tend to be very thin. This is one thing I would invest money on.

I saw a bulletin the other day saying that they are apparently banned from campus as of Fall 2008 because they emit heat which could melt the plastic surrounding it. But otherwise, I believe any lamp which doesn't blow a fuse will be fine.

password - the curtains in my d's dorm were thick off-white old curtains...for $20 we assembled curtians on the same traverse rod that really made her room bright...but no they are not that bad .

doglover - wow - last year I asked about that exact lamp (bought at Target) and there was no problem...I thought they were generally called "octopus" lamps but the Housing website bans "spider" lamps

I checked the Target recall list - they have not recalled the lamp - that is interesting -

Yeah, the lamps are pretty popular - we have a couple in my dorm which was actually provided by housing, which I guess will be replaced next year. I had even asked my RA at the beginning of the year if my lamp would be ok and she said it was fine so I'm guessing that has changed (I think this is something pretty recent). I know they emit a lot of heat (it does tend to kill bugs and if you touch it, it does actually hurt). But it's going to be really tough finding a lamp which can provide that much light.

Some people do have TVs in their rooms, but most don't. Not having a TV encourages you to get out of your room and socialize. Plus, you can watch a lot of TV shows online now, which allows you to have a more flexible schedule.

Is there a Bed Bath and Beyond near Ithaca? Or do most shop at Target? I was hoping to use the BBB registry where I pick things out here and pick them up there.

There is a Bed, Bath and Beyond. It's in Downtown Ithaca on Route 13 and is currently being renovated. For those without a car, I'm not sure how good the bus service is. A lot of kids go to Target b/c the #30 has a regular schedule and runs right through campus.

Of course...if you use the registry and come with your parents....you'll have no issue!
