I am thinking about taking an online chemistry course over the summer, and my guidance counselor recommended I take Keystone. However, I still have many concerns over whether or not an online summer chem class will be the best option.

How hard will the summer class be? Is 6 weeks a proficient amount of time to solidly learn and understand chemistry, granted I spend a few hours every day working on it. Also, what if I get stuck and can't understand something in an online class? Will there be a person I can go to for help, or am I pretty much stuck to the textbook and lecture vids?

Will this put me at any disadvantage in AP Chemistry? I knew of a few friends who took Pre-Calc in less than 4 weeks during the Summer and moved into AP Calc. They said that AP Calc was much harder for them than their peers due to the sheer speed in which they learned PreCalc. How much should I be concerned about this jumping from an online Chem class to AP Chem?

Hey I am going to keystone full time. I take a full course load with them and I can tell you they are a very good school. Finishing a regular chemistry course in 8 weeks is certainly do able. I am taking AP chemistry with them and I really like it. You do some virtual labs which are pretty easy. The way the lessons are set up is that you read the textbook watch or listen to a video exec planing everything then read the lesson. after this you usually have quizzes and labs abort it.

Now if you get stuck which usually does not happen after reading everything. You can email your teacher but generally they take 24 hours to respond and I really do not find the help they give to be fast enough like its good but then again I am impatient. I also am going to tell you to connect with other keystone students because they can help you. Remember you can work at any time 24/7 and you do not have to wait for your teacher to grade something to move on so let’s say you finish quiz one you do not have to wait for the grade to go to quiz 2. They hav no control over you schedule and you can work however you want. The AP courses are NOTHING like the regular courses. You go from having about 50 assignment 7 of which you have to do to 120 grades assignments plus discussions and tons of others activities. I can out for fellow keystones what he course is like.

Well, I was planning to AP Chemistry in school after the summer.
Anyways, here are some questions-
How do the quizzes and tests work? Do you take them on the internet at home, on paper mailed to your house, or to an actual location? How do they prevent a student from cheating online if taken at home?

Can you drop a class completely if you don’t think you’re doing too well in it?

If you take the course online you do the quizes on the computer and if you do it corespondence which is much slower you do on paper and mail it in. They cannot prevent you from cheating because there is nothing to block you. Thing is you have homework and and other assignments that you can not look up. I would not reccomend I heard that when you get caught they will put you through hell and back. You have 30 days to drop the class with a full refund. Mind you the farther you get into your course the less money you get back.

ps. The quizes and test account for a fraction of your grade you will not be able to cheat on any of the other assignments.

@brandigirl: Are the quizzes multiple choice?

yes but they can sometimes have short answer

@brandgirl

Does dropping a class leave any type of mark on your transcript?
And how do labs work? Are they online virtual labs, or do you have to use supplies at home to conduct them and are handson . I’m somewhat weak with actual hands-on lab without someone helping me.

The labs are usually virtual with 3 or 4 being hands on the hands are mega easy and I will pm you on how the virtual labs check out edulabs.com

How does a correspondence course in Keystone Work? I’m mulling over whether to do that or online. I know that the coursework is mailed to you, but how are you supposed to interact with the teacher if it’s not online based? How do quizzes and tests get graded? Do they get graded after you take them, or do you mail back all the assessments you did during the entire course and have it graded all at once?

I wouldn’t do the correspondence if you want t finish in six weeks. Yes you have to mails everything in and the only way you will be able to interact with you teacher is by calling. Which is far from ideal. I have never taken a correspondence why dot you call keystone and ask for specifics? They are relatively friendly if you have any more Q’s please post.

Thanks for the quick replies!

One more quick question, lets say you somehow screw up and are not doing as well in a class as you’d like. How would dropping a class affect you academically? Would it leave any sort of blemish on your transcript( I’m not sure If this is different for online hs students vs traditional hs students like me).
