questions about Texas A&M

SHiggins2011: Don’t know if you are still reading this thread or not. Looks like it got way off topic from your original question about journalism, political science or engineering. My son is a senior Political Science major, and they have an excellent department, I think. With the Bush School down there now, they have quite a few opportunities to hear amazing speakers, and it also draws some excellent professors. As for what to do with the major, that’s another thing. My son is in the Corps of Cadets (which I highly recommend), and trying to determine whether or not to join the military after graduation. Of course there are the various grad schools, MBA, Law, etc. But, he is finding out that there are many people with PS degrees that go into business, so consider business as perhaps a minor. He is currently interning with a well known wealth management firm, even though he has no business background.
As for the journalism department, definitely don’t come to TAMU for that. Currently, you can’t even major in journalism, though we have heard they are adding it back. You can minor in it. Just read the Battalion (student newspaper), which used to be fairly decent, and you will know that journalism is weak at TAMU. My daughter wrote for her high school paper, and it was light years ahead of the Batt. And being an Aggie grad myself, I am the first to defend all things A&M over UT usually, but this time I say go to UT if you can get into their journalism school.
As for engineering, TAMU is awesome. If you can get into engineering, that would be a great choice. The rest of your decision would have to be determined by what type of campus life you are looking for, which others have touched on. Come visit. It isn’t pretty, but it is awesome!

Personal opinion: I think the styling of the buildings are not the most pleasing, but I believe the live oak trees are beautiful. The facilities like auditoriums, labs, rec center, etca are world class. The real beauty is in the people and relationships formed. You have to visit to appreciate that.
