Questions about Textbooks

I'm 6th on the waitlist for English R1A, should I buy the books for it now or wait for school to start/ I get in the class?

Also, I'm pretty lazy/don't feeling like buying all the expensive books for this AC class that is totally unrelated to my major. Right now I'm thinking about sharing with one of my friends, who is conveniently my roommate. Do you recommend doing that, or do you think it'll be extremely inconvenient. If it makes a difference, there is no discussion for this class.

The book search thingy says i should get the custom math1a/math1b 6th edition book for my Math 1a class, If i already have the 5th edition version that is the full thing (non-custom) should i bother buying the custom 6th edition one?

Am I late in buying books, cuz it seems everyone around me has already taken steps in securing books for their classes... is it fine if i just wait to come to berkeley to get my books?

If i buy off amazon, and i don't think it'll get to my house in 5 days, and instead it comes next week or so, and if i go home to pick it up the weekend after school starts, would it be okay? I guess my question is.... do i need the text books on the first week of class (wed, thurs, fri)

For the chem iclicker thing, how do they know that you're actualy clicking it, couldnt u just give it to ur friend and have him click on his and yours for u? Do ppl actually do that?

Also is it important to get the most recent edition? For example for development studies C10, the book search gives Geographies of Development 3rd edition, however only 2nd edition is on Amazon, will that suffice or will I have to continue my quest for the third edition?

Also, do I have to attend my waitlisted class (english r1a) on the first week?

i just wanted to bump… and i understand that asking tons of questions mite seem overwhealming, so i just wanted to narrow my questions down to these:

 1. Do we need the books on the first week of school, or will having them on the second week suffice?
 2. Do we need to go to and buy books for the classes that we are waitlisted for?(I’m 6th on the waitlist for English r1a)
 3. Has anyone had experience with sharing books for a class with a roommate if there are tons of books for a class. I plan on doing this with an AC/breadth class, not a hardcore science/math class.
 4. Whens the latest i can buy books from the cal bookstore/neds (can i wait till I move-in, and then buy the books)?

Wow, i was hoping to narrow my questions, but I seem to have practically rewritten them, uhmmm any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

I don’t think you need your books on the first day of class, so you can get them after you’re sure you got enrolled. Especially since your roommate has those books so you can borrow them until you get your own. I’m not too sure about sharing books but you can probably figure it out after the first day of class.
About the editions though, I heard that it’s kind of a pain in the ass if you don’t get the right one.

Err, let me just add that it is RECOMMENDED that you buy your book(s) AFTER your first lecture. During the first lecture, your professor will tell you whether he/she wants you to buy the specific edition or other editions are acceptable. Therefore, you will NOT need your books for lecture 1.

In addition, some courses…in all honesty…you don’t even need to buy the books. But then again, that’s not recommended.

Hope it helps.

@ Hunterbender: What if the books don’t arrive for another week or two since I’m planning to get them cheaper online? Thanks.

I personally dont think you miss out on too much from not reading the book unless you have to do homework from it. In that case, this is where getting the correct version/customed/newest edition of a book is necessary (such as in math1a/b) because the problem numbers are different. And if you really need a book, some classes reserve copy of the texts and you can go to the library to use it.

wait. where do you find out what books you need for your classes?

[Locate Course Materials](<a href=“Official Online Store”>Official Online Store)

Just look for your classes!

HelloAll,

Well, there are always textbooks in the lib. on reserve, and sometimes the prof will have extra copies to lend [I believe that was UC podcasts]. But worse comes to worse, you can always just meet up with someone and share book for a week. Usually problem sets [aka homework] aren’t due for sometimes, so you should be fine.
