Questions About the Application

i have a few question about how to fill out the app

i want to list my EC’s on the app instaed of a resume, but there is no space to explain what a club with an ambiguous name is. can i type a few word description in parenthases next to the club name?

about how long should the summers essay and engineering essay be?

thank you

also, do many or most people do the what else would you like us to know essay? i didnt even see it on the online app, only the paper one.

i thought of another one-

if i take a sat2 in november, will they really have that score before they read my app, or will they read it then see the score a week or so later? i know the app says november is ok, it just seems so late since it takes a few weeks to score and decisions come out in mid dec.

Here's the way i'm handling my ECs. I'm using the paper PDF form of the app. I typed in the names on the left and for a few of them that weren't so clear i used parentheses to say what they were. Example: Whiz Quiz (TV Quiz Show). I put the honors for everything on the right except for two things, which i wanted to talk about more than room was given. So in these i put "see 'what else...'" and in the what else page i put details of these activities, though not a full-blown resume.

I don't know about the engineering essay, but the summer one isn't really an essay, but rather "answer this as quickly as possible" thing. If you're like me, you just put down a couple sentences explaining that you waste summers with your friends and riding your bike. If you did something really cool like tour europe or have some involved internship, you'll want it to be a couple paragraphs probably (you can attach a sheet if you absolutely need to).

No clue on the nov tests, but they won't burn your app before they get your score, so i wouldn't worry.

is 800 or a 850 words too long for the engineering essay?

Are you guys going over the 500/300 word limits for the regular essays? If so, by how much?

if those 800 words are a bunch of crap, it's way too long. if it seriously takes you that much to express exactly what you're interested in, it's fine. I'm only speculating, but i think you can probably delete a few unecessary things, since not very many people really need that much to discuss engineering.

its definitely not crap. i have alot to discuss because i have to explain why i like engineer and my long history with it, the work experience i have and why i want to do engineering at princeton. but i guess i could keep it under 800.

1 - yeah that's fine

2 - I wouldn't call the summer activities question an essay at all. If you want to elaborate on something, that's not the place to do it.

3 - there's no guarantee that November scores will get there on time, so you're taking a risk; but as long as your scores aren't delayed and there aren't any weird problems you should be fine.

RenMan, I would say that 800 is definitely pushing it, because if it is that long, they honestly may not even read it all. I know it is hard, but try and be as concise as possible.

ok, thanks for the advice

They did not even want me to rush the November scores - so they'll be there on time. Anyway, I propose that you call them as soon as you receive the scores, as this might be a few days earlier.

I wont exceed the word limit by more than 10 or 20 words, and concerning the summer thing - I don't know whether I should write much to it - I was in Australia and it was an amazing experience, but I focus on Australia in another part of the app a bit.

What I'd like to know: How do you guys "hide" your chill out and relax summer holidays ? I mean not everyone has an internship or somethin and it sounds a bit idiotic to say: Well, I drank few beers too much this summer. Any advice ?

DavidAlex, the engineering essay has no word limit so i'm not really sure how long it should be

and for the summer essay, if you didnt do anything just write that you caught up on some good reading or whatever

If you hang out with friends during summer, put that. Over half of Princeton applicants probably don't have friends. Honesty will be a breath of fresh air for them. I don't think talking about beer would be good, though.

The beer-thing was a joke, though probably not too far away from truth. But I didn't consider to put it down.

On the one hand side it relieves me, that I may tell them, what I did - on the other hand, it kinda worries me if you tell me that half of the applicants dont have friends. I (naively?) always thought that Princetonians are a socially active bunch of people.

i really dont want to be going to a school where half the applicants dont have friends

but anyway DavidAlex, if i were you i would write a bit more than saying you only hung out with friends

in the A Few Details section i was think of putting down the line "i never like to shower with men of my own sex" from the Woody Allen movie Annie hall as my favorite line. whats does everyone think of that?

No, no. i was wrong to say that. For starters, i think Princetonians are very social compared to other schools of their caliber, like caltech. And what i was really thinking of were the people who try to make their application sound like all they do is study and do internships at hospitals and crap like that to make their app look better. A lot of these people get rejected because they lack the "human" component of their app.

I agree with Clendenenator. Colleges clearly want people who will contribute to the social scene, and that requires non-automatons. That's why I kind of love one of Pomona's essays: tell us about a fun experience, unrelated to school or your extracurricular activities.

in the essay section it says to check off the boxes of the essays you're doing. my first is the experience essay but for the quote im using my own qoute, so should i not check a box? i think thats what i should do but im just wondering if the computer is going to give me a problem because there wont be two things checked off.

arent all th essays experience essays? it says 'using the quote, tell us about an experience which defined a value'.
